I was thinking about all the chicken phrases that are in our language (she flew the coop) and that made me think about farm phrases. Awhile ago we listed all the chicken ones, so I thought it would be fun to try general agricultural/farm phrases. Farming is so much a part of our roots that there are plenty. So....I'll start it off with a couple, each person add one...

A tough row to hoe.....meaning a hard job.
s/he is in high cotton

blind as a one eyed mule in a root cellar
I just found this phrase in a book I own called " Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase origins"
When I read this I burst out laughing. It makes me laugh everytime I think of it.
LOL,
Emily

Living high on the hog

Useless as tits on a boar hog

Rode hard and put up wet

Why buy the cow if you can get the milk for free

Can't hit the broad side of a barn

He bought the farm

Not sure if it fits, but my gramma had a farm and she always told us when we were goofing off, that she was going to slap us nekkid, hide our clothes and tell God she found us that way.

I was just on the phone with the local feed store, the gal said I needed to talk to the manager, but he was busy, and to try to get a hold of him would be like trying to catch a rat in a round barn...
