Hurricane is so adorable!!! Someday I'll have a horse. A full sized and a mini!!! Lol

Also I would love to hear more about peafowl they're definitely on our list. My grandparents' neighbor has some free range peafowl and I love them they're stunning. We would probably want our to free range and come back in at night. How would you teach them to go about that? Well I must say that when/if we ever get peafowl I want them to be tame. I've heard they can be kind of aggressive though?

I know they can get blackhead from chickens but I also know many people raise peafowl turkeys and chickens together. What are the odds they would get blackhead if raised with/on the same ground as chickens?

Personally I want white for sure but I have also loved some if the other rare colors I've seen but I can't find a good photographic list of colors listed with images. That would be very helpful to me and also fun to look at and dream.

Usually with peafowl you keep them in a temporary pen for the first month. That way they learn where home is. Then you can let them out but make sure they still have a feed pan to lure them back in. That could be one way. Usually when you have older peafowl the younger ones learn from the older ones faster. They can become aggressive. Usually aggression you will notice during breeding season. None of my peafowl are aggressive though; even during breeding season they're not aggressive. It depends on the bird and how they are raised. If you baby them you can get aggressive peafowl, and peafowl that become so attached to you that they don't want to leave you. You can still "spoil" your birds but don't spoil them all the time. Teach them what behavior is allowed.

Something I just want to point out mainly based on terminology and so people don't get the wrong idea. Blackhead doesn't actually start because of chickens. It's caused by a protozoa that is spread through cecal worm. Cecal worms can be found in earthworms, feces from other birds. Chickens love earthworms; if the chicken eats and earthworm that is carrying a cecal worm carrying the protozoa, the chicken carries it. Chickens may not show symptoms, which makes it a quiet way these parasites can get into a flock. When other poultry like turkeys and peafowl ingest the worm's eggs and then they are infected with the parasite. Then the protozoa can get to them. Peafowl and turkeys at a young age don't have a strong immune system like chickens. If a bird will become infected with blackhead depends on how much they're exposed to. If they have enough pen space, chances of blackhead decrease. Less space, chances for getting blackhead increase. It's again based on exposure. Smaller confined units will have a higher concentration of the protozoa. Free range decreases it because they have so much space. Doesn't mean they won't get it, just chances decrease. Yes they can share the same ground. It would be a good idea to worm your birds to decrease the worms population, decreasing the chances of getting blackhead.

If you look at Rocking B-A-B Ranch, they have some good photos of the more rare colors. They even have Green peafowl, very rare, and expensive. If you go to the UPA and look through the Breeder's Directory you can go onto some of the breeder's websites and look at the photos.

I did not realize it was already for sale, hold your horses on getting one for yourself, because I think they will give one calendar to each winner, so you might only need to get one for your mom. If I got one for free b/c my picture won, I would probably accept it, but I think I will just get a collection of my best chicken pictures and make my own calendar with my pictures. Shutterfly makes good calendars. Or I might just use Staples.

Congratulations Sanna! Great picture!
Thank you!

We got replies in the original thread where pictures were asked for the calendar, and apparently yes, they will send us each a copy.
