I work at a small exotic animal park

That must be a fun job to have! What do you do on a normal day at work?

I took a peek also and that's a NICE looking pet house. Very reasonably priced too.

Wow, you're one busy farmer!
big_smile.png
All that work must be exhausting, but also very rewarding.

I stay busy, but also stop and smell the roses...
big_smile.png
...like every few minutes....
big_smile.png
. Very rewarding! ...probably just like what you do! ....you're probably busier than me.

All that and a babysitter, too? Awesome!

I don't butcher any of our animals. We do hunt and fish, but for someI get tired of the smell and noise REAL quick. I learned early on that reason it's different for me. We've talked of butchering roo's a few times, and maybe we will at some point. Who knows? I'm not against it by any means, just not tough enough for it, I suppose.

It's good to hear of folks that care about the animals life and treat it with respect right through to butchering day. That's how it ought to be. Good for you, 3acres (and the rest of you that have commented), good for you.

And in other news...or, not really news at all ...lol...my day was a complete bust. It's windy and cool outside and I despise being outside on days like this. I tried to get out there and work on my chores, but I didn't get much of anything done. I was supposed to receive some hatching eggs in the mail today, but they didn't arrive, which further bummed my mood. I was pretty excited about getting them... 15+ Cream Legbar eggs to put in the 'bator! Plus tomorrow, I should be receiving a dozen hatching eggs that I won in a contest here on BYC. Those will be BC Marans eggs. I did manage to sneak 3 little Welsummer chicks home today when I went to order goat feed so that was a plus! Anyway, long story short, all I really accomplished today was a few pics while wandering about the place.

You bet! I'm so used to it now...I forget what it was like to just be able to go do stuff. Some things are done during naps, some things are done with some imagination....

. My oldest boy ( 6 now ) spent a tremendous amount of time in the saddle as a real youngster! I was raising bucking bulls then and had to check the cows a horseback to survive...
big_smile.png
. Most of the cows were tame, but the few that weren't made things interesting.

I understand perfectly on your thoughts of butchering! These little turkeys are going to be hard for me to do. I'm going to do it though. Little buggers are so darn tame already and all roost on my hands and arms...
big_smile.png
. Luckily I get to keep what will work for what I need of the Bourbon Reds to breed with! I've been watching Farm Kings on GAC and learning a lot of Joel Salatin and am on board...

Sorry to hear about the day not going so well! Aaahhh, I see.... the surplus of chickens comment comes from experience...lol....JUST JOKIN! I can see where you were bummed about your eggs not coming! I wasn't told when two of my shipments were shipped and when they didn't come on April 1st...which I knew they might not....I was like AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH, where are they!...lol. I bet that is awesome to incubate...I can't wait! I'm going to the feed store today to buy a few things...they still have chicks and ducks....I might have to call my sponsor....haha...
big_smile.png
. Congrats on your 3 new chicks! Words that will being coming from my mouth later today...."Could you get me a box please"....lol.

Very nice photos! Like that name - Nanny Boo Boo! ...

Yep, it comes from experience. When I bought the chicks, I was actually thinking to myself, "I JUST commented on how these peeps sneak up on you and add up. I was SO right." LOL
I told myself not to do it, but of course, I never listen to me. Can I get the number of that sponsor?!?
big_smile.png

Oh, and make sure to ask for a BIG box.

I'm a care taker for mammals and birds. I have hyenas, servals, cougars, lemurs, hooved stock, and several different kinds of large parrots.
That sounds like a lot of fun.

Well...I don't know if I'm busier than you are. Most of the time I'm busy chasing our staff around, making sure they do their jobs!
barnie.gif
I think I need to get a big whip and walk around cracking the darn thing when I find people slacking.
lol.png
I'm in the process of finding someone who actually wants to have a job and is motivated to work. That'll fix a lot of things and I'll have more time for things I was hired to do in the first place. Like horses!
big_smile.png

And yes, I do stop and smell the roses every here and there also. I don't think we would have all these nice pictures to share if we didn't stop to look around at times.
big_smile.png
Those little moments keep me going. Otherwise I'd go nuts.
barnie.gif
Oh, wait! I'm already nuts. Too late!!

Did you estimate how much each pound of pork cost you to raise and have butchered?

How old were your DP roosters? Mine were 20ish weeks old. We are so used to tender chicken. We slow cooked one and it was very tender. But cooking them like you did makes them inedible. Did yours free range as well? I assume so. Mine had built up a ton of muscle which was tough.

I would get RPs again in an instant if it wasn't for my neighbours. They are extremely friendly and beautiful birds, which makes them love everyone.. even the neighbours.. and their cars.. My neighbours were tolerant, but I think scratching their new car and staring in car windows of visitors who refused to get out of their cars because of the crazy turkeys they thought would kill them... Hard to explain that the turkeys just want to say hello.

Turkeys are obsessed with motor vehicles. Tractors, SUVs, Cars, Trucks.. You name it, they love it.

I wish I could give you a better answer on what it cost me to feed that pig!!! I started keeping detailed records on it, but then quit...I shouldn't of and am going to keep track this next one! He didn't eat much grain at first. It took him forever to go through the first couple sacks...so I let it go, but he then picked it up later...
big_smile.png
. Since it is so good to move them around all the time, I had him cleaning up my used up gardens....worked great!

Here's the facts.... I bought him on Aug 19th just weaned as I pulled into their driveway for $50. He must of weighed 40 to 50 lbs ???. I took him to the butcher on Jan. 9th and he had a hanging/carcass wieght of 220lbs. It cost me $227 total to butcher him. That's all I know for sure. I fed him cracked corn and pig starter the whole time for grain....all sacks. The nearest feed store was always out of everything but the starter. This time I am buying starter in the sacks and then bulk feed to finish to it out....should be way cheaper. If I had to say I probably spent around $200 somewhere to feed him??? I am sorry on that! Other critter shared the corn I bought for him.

The day I got Bacon. Aug. 19th. He was wild and scared to death. Giving him milk made us best buds almost immediately!

Jan 8th in the watermelon patch.

My roosters were hatched on Aug. 10th in this thing by a broody hen. RIR dads....Barred Rock moms

I moved it everyday and feed them lots of watermelon, squash, weeds, grasshoppers, chick starter and tomatoes. ...later added corn and oats.

They then went to the older chicken run and coop where they were let out to free range all over the barnyard everyday and feed layer crumbles, oats and corn.

The first night I did that, they didn't follow the rest of the chickens back into the run and coop at night to be locked up. I couldn't find them anywhere??? I searched for hours. Then thought to check by that pasture pen thing they grew up in....they were right up against it.....
big_smile.png
.

pictured on Jan. 17th. I believe I butchered them the next day.

If we raised chickens and roosters like this, we wouldn't have to pluck any feathers....
big_smile.png
. Second and third picture I have posted that wasn't right behind my house here. I took these at the Missouri State fair this last year. Poor thing always had a big crowd around him. I've never seen so much poultry in one spot as I did at that fair, it was neat. He was just born without feathers the sign said.

Yikes, I bet the turkeys doing that stuff was kinda bad!

Right? I don't know why I didn't start using these things sooner. After the peeps have grown and moved out, it will work perfectly for a sick bay or even a broody with her nest.
