Thanks, aoxa! I'm loving having these turkey poults! My first ever turkeys. Awesome time! I have all I need to make my incubator now. I can't wait to hatch a few poults out down the road someday! I really like the turkey pics you've posted and seen some posts you made in the turkey section. They have only made a noise other than a kinda chick churp a couple times, but it was really neat! ...I seen a couple posts you made on liking their noises.

Future layin hen chicks.....2 Speckled Sussex, 2 Buff Orpington, 2 Columbian Wyandottes, 2 Silved Laced Wyandottes, 2 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Barred Rocks, 2 not sure's, 2 Black Stars, and 1 free exotic chick that I think is a red game bird.

3acres- Just WOW! That's a lot of birds!! How cool is that?? I have to be very strict with myself when it comes to bringing animals home, especially birds. It's so easy to just add a few more here and another few there...before you know it, you've got 60 chickens running around the yard, pooping on the patio furniture, and giving you more eggs than you can possibly give away. But, I suspect you're aware of how quickly they add up...that brooder pen looks suspiciously like a truck bed toolbox! (That's got to be the ultimate 'mobile' coop!)

Yes their noises are so adorable. I knew all their calls. They were really easy to understand. They had calls for when they were separated, calls for when they saw something they didn't like (it sounded like bip.....bip....bip) Very quiet warning compared to a chicken.

If I get turkeys again they have to be too heavy to fly :p

Is farming your full time gig? :)

You have a lot going on!

Yep. Cows, chores, raising and growing our food, a 6 year old boy, a 9 month old boy, cooking, cleaning, re-doing our old house, making our furniture, saving us money, errand boy, etc, etc is what I do.....
big_smile.png
. I'm trying to build as big a cow herd as I can....it's going to be a real slow process. That's my main thing for bringing in money.

Hauling and raking hay with the grocery getter out on the back 40....lol....so I could do things and still watch the baby....

That is a truck tool box...lol. I took it out of my truck so I could haul more small square bales in out of the field. It was cleaned out and just laying around....working great for a short time here...

. Yeah, I'm addicted to bringing birdies home now! I'm content now though...for the most part....

. I love animals and will have my pets, but what I'm putting together is for having food for the table. I hope I don't offend anybody with that. I eat a lot of meat lifting the weights like I do. I'll admit, I hunt, fish and stuff, but it was hard to go ahead and butcher my first extra roo's last fall. I can do it now though to keep balance here and food on the table. I have never tasted such good chicken and they were just RIR / BR roo's. This is my first meat birds. I have the extra eggs sold too if I have any...there again, I eat a ton of eggs for the protein...may not have extra. Bittersweet, IMO, raising your own food. Awesome warm fuzzy feelings knowing you raised what you are eating and I love that, but hard really knowing what you are eating because you hung out everyday. I played soccer everyday with my hog I just butchered...lol. HUGE PET!!! He loved to play soccer and another game of pretending to ignore me...hard to explain. I'll keep naming and becoming good friends with what I raise for meat though. They seem happier that way....I learn a lot and have a great time!!! I'm rambling...lol.

Neat! Can't wait to hear all that. They are real quiet now. One would only sleep if I was hoovering over the box making turkey noises and never quit churping loadly unless I did it. It's been real quit now too. I'll feel it out, but I want to lead them to the timbers I have to explore later when they get bigger....don't want to lose any, but think they would have a blast out there.

I found thinking about the butchering was SO much worse than actually doing it. Once you get the kill just right.. it's like a a really settling feeling.. knowing that you did that.. that you made sure that bird did not suffer, and that instead of sending it off to be butchered by someone else's hands - causing undue stress - you did it. For the birds. For your family. It's respectful, and I for one know exactly what you mean by warm fuzzy feelings.

Did you butcher your own hog? I don't think I'm qualified to do that part anytime soon :p

I wish my dual purpose boys tasted as good as you describe. I found them tough, and their legs were not good at all unless cooked verrrrrrryyy slowly.

Here is a photo of Rufus - the father of our Royal Palm who passed in the fire. He's stunning. His son looked just like him.

Yep, I agree 100%....thinking about butchering them was WAY worse than doing it! After I did it, I felt great to provide meat to the family! It brought order back to the flock and was needed. All around a good thing since I want to raise things and know where my food comes from. It's the route I'm going to take here. Give everything a good a home as possible and some get to stay for a long time and others will be food for the table right here. I see a lot of animals on craigslist and at auctions that just make me sad on how they are living. You're right on everything you typed! I hope it isn't selfish, but I personally gotta experience the joys of broody hens ( which I did last summer ), incubating, buying chicks and such. I don't want to pass anything on down the line to suffer or be stressed and I want the feelings of providing for ourselves......so it is what it is and I feel it really is a respectful thing to do and a great way of life. Plus I feel without a doubt, culling is great for the greater good of herds and flocks...just hard to do sometimes.

I took Bacon to the butcher....(the pig..

). Butchering him is over my head right now. It does bother me thinking about not getting my own pigs meat back. I think they did a honest job, but don't know??? I do butcher my own deer, but keep that real simple. The meat from that pig as been so GREAT! I can't believe the flavor! I'm looking for another to get started feeding right now. I'd like another Berkshire.

I put a little salt and pepper on that first rooster and stuck it in the oven for an hour and a half or so....took it out and ate the whole thing right there by the stove with a big glass of milk....didn't even sit down....lol. I'm bad about using condiments on chicken, but didn't feel I needed to. I thought it was great and super tender. I shared the next one...

. They didn't have an abundance of meat on them. Looking forward to these bigger meat birds. ...and the dp chickens and roo's as needed too.

Wow...Rufus is a beautiful bird! Royal Palms are a great looking bird. My oldest boy has spent a lot of time with me looking at turkey pictures, looking at turkey hatchery stuff, reading about turkeys and he likes them the best. My little boy is on it too, but just likes the gobblin on youtube...lol. Would you not have the Royal Palms again?

Wow, you're one busy farmer!

All that work must be exhausting, but also very rewarding.

I love the Royal Palms. They're gorgeous. I'd love to have one!
Maybe, now that Joe the Turkey has passed away, I can talk the boss into letting me bring one home. lol The girls are all alone now.
