Don't stop girl, you know you love it when you get your chick on!
'Cause you'll be cleaning brooders all night long

Yeah, we do a little word-changing around here, too. I'm very easily amused. It doesn't take much to get me laughing. In fact, my iPhone auto correct cracks me up on a daily basis. I may be the only person ever that HOPES it will change my texts in some random and bizarre way. I'm a total goofball, I know.

As for the chicks- well, the survivors are doing well. We had 2 DOA and 2 more die the first day. Another died the 2nd day and then 3 more after the 72 hour 'refund' window had passed. Meyer's gave me a credit for the first 5, which was nice, but I'll not order chicks from them again. Nearly all of them had pasty butts for a week. I've never had to deal with dying chicks and wiping birdy butts like that before. Not fun.

I went and bought a new coop to use as a brooder for them so they could be outside in the garden. I figured they'd do better if they could get out in the dirt and fresh air. The coop is meant for 2-3 laying hens, but it works really well as a brooder. I've got the heat lamp inside so it stays nice and warm, they've got food and water in there too, and also out in the open part. I mixed a little pine shavings and compost and spread it around on the ground inside so they'd have good stuff to scratch around in. They really perked up after moving into it. I think the best cure for pasty butt is to let them eat dirt!

Awwwww!

AccidentalFarm - I'm super easily amused! I try to hold it in, but is hard...lol. If I was an Indian, I would be named something along the lines of...amused easy, plays in dirt, etc...

. Life is too short not to have a fun time!

Sorry to hear about those chicks! I'm having trouble with the chicks I have bought from the feed store as far as pasty butt. Luckily I have only lost one cornish cross that I got from a feed store....it didn't ever have pasty butt though. It was a little bit of a loner, only had 4 at that time.... it ate and drank...maybe a little lazy....then just all of a sudden gave me the I'm in trouble look and died???? The hatchery stuff...McMurray and Cackle....have all been fine so far. I've never ordered from a hatchery before and got one shipment in Monday, one Tuesday, and one today.....it's been awesome!!! I have been scared to death of opening the box and seeing dead ones and them dying right away!!! ....I'm not out of the woods yet I'd say, but so far so good. I have gotten lucky! The free exotic chick from McMurray worries me. I think it's a red game bird. It is off. I spent the first day giving it drinks all day. It ate yesterday by itself finally....still alive today???? ...but is a odd one....lol. I call it Skeedo. Skeedo doesn't go with what I am putting together, but I'm trying all I can to keep it alive.

That's a great coop! I check the coops like that out every time I go to the feed store. They look real handy to have. I am starting to prepare for the next stages in my stuff's development myself. I live for this stuff! I'm so happy taking care of all these animals!

Here's what I have going on right now.....(besides the outside animals)....

16 Cornish Cross

5 Broad Breasted Bronze and 6 Bourbon Red turkeys

26 Red Rangers

Future layin hen chicks.....2 Speckled Sussex, 2 Buff Orpington, 2 Columbian Wyandottes, 2 Silved Laced Wyandottes, 2 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Barred Rocks, 2 not sure's, 2 Black Stars, and 1 free exotic chick that I think is a red game bird.

11 Rouens and 2 Pekin

2, 4 week old Pekins and 1, 3 week old Pekin
