I always wanted to go to a fair but, no one that drove, wanted to. Wish they televised them or youtubed 'em.

I'll have my parents video tape my show with my camera and post on youtube and share it here along with some photos. Thank you all for wishing me good luck.

OK Birdrain I have a question. I am having a HE double hockey sticks of a time keeping my cows head up. Should I tie her with her head at the height I want it during show so that she learns when she keeps it up pressure goes away?? That's how I trained them for leading.

Does your halter have a chain for that goes under the jaw? My halter had a chain on it that goes below it and it made it easy for me. Though none of my beef animals kept their head down. Jingle the chain or kind of shake the lead rope while keeping their head up kept my steer calm and my heifer calm for most of the show. When I tie up my animals it's mainly for brushing them down and I just have it the same height as their head.

This is my cow Granite's Promise. I had to show her at the rodeo since I was part of a Calf Scramble. You want to have your heifer stand like this or you can put the back left leg back to make her look more square but both work. If you pull the head too far up you can make the topline bow and you might get docked for that if you have her in a breeding heifer class. You just want her head perked up like this not trying to lick the sky.

This can also be a good show stance. This is my steer Auptomis Prime 3 years ago.

This is the other show stance you can do with the back legs like this. Try not to stretch your heifer out to much because it can make it look as if she has a weak topline which can drop you in the breeding heifer class if your doing it.

Thanks! I'm showing in the breeding heifer class. This is my first time so I don't mind if I do horrible but it would be nice to do good. My halter does have a chain on it. I'll get pics. Do you shave your cows?? They look nice!!

Black angus are so pretty. Those ones make me want to take some chalk and doodle on their blackboard hide!

(Unfortunately, it'd probably look like a butchers chart when I was done as I really LOVE black angus to pieces....)

LOL!! I love Black Angus to. BUT the breed I truely love is the Tarentaise. Mine is half Angus and half Tarentaise which is why she has so much flesh on the neck and under the jaw.

When I showed steers, if they didn't want to lift their head I would hold the chain close and put my fist under their chin to lift their head. If they were really bad, I would practice for a few minutes before even walking them.

The last time I showed cows though, I was showing dairy cows for someone and trained them with voice commands. Cows are like very big, hooved dogs. Positive reinforcement works just as well with cows as it does with dogs.

We had a Jersey cow that would come when she was called and my heifer Surprise loves licking people for some weird reason.

Thank You! No we don't shave them. I would brush them with a curry comb, a Scotch comb twice a day. The steer I would give him a bath for two weeks before fair and during fair. The cow would just get brushed twice a day with a curry comb and a Scotch comb twice a day.

Just one problem with that, both of them are not Black Angus. They both have some Black Angus. My steer is a balancer (50%-50%) between Gelbvieh and Black Angus. My cow is a Gelbvieh with a little bit of Black Angus.

I love the Gelbvieh. High fertility, low birth weight, easy calving, great quality milk, gain weight and grow fast as you could see with my bull calf. They are round in the butt unlike the Angus.
Most of my dad's herd is balancer along with my brother. My herd is the only one that is Gelbvieh only. I'll try to get a picture of one my dad's Angus cows and post it next to a pic of my Gelbvieh so you can see the difference.
