Fast breathing question

The smallest of the three ducks (4 weeks old - welsh harlequins) will sometimes breathe much faster than the other two (and occasionally open his mouth - which I took to be panting). After putting water in front of it drinks and the panting stops but the breathing is still a little accelerated.

From reading the forum it looks like heat, but I wasn’t sure because I made them a little run so they can leave the heat of the brooder whenever they want, it’s the smallest, and I’ve never seen the other two breathing fast or panting at all!

Hi! I am a new duck owner, I am sure someone else will come along soon. You can try taking the fast breathing ones to another room that is a little cooler to see if it subsides. Out of my 6 babies I have, one stays warmer than the rest and will pant and breath fast as well. If it doesn't subside in a cooler area it may be best to consult with a veterinarian to be sure there isn't a respiratory problem. Hopefully they are just a little to warm.

Thank you, that’s a great idea to eliminate the heat possibility! Will give it a go, otherwise Vet is the next stop.

Me too! I spend hours on here! My babies are almost 7 weeks old, it has been a rollercoaster. So much worry. Shewy!

Hi, you don't say where you live so if it's hot outside like it's been here in Georgia I can certainly understand why it would be panting. I'm been panting for the last 2 months but since I really don't know let's get @Miss Lydia on this thread and see what she has to say about this. Maybe a respiratory situation?

I agree about trying less heat. Especially if your still having warm or hot temps. And if you can take a video of what your duckling is doing that may help too. You'll have to put it on you tube or Vimeo then copy and paste it here.
