Faverolles crosses

My hen recently hatched five adorable chicks. I am so interested to see how they turn out, as my flock consists of a variety of breeds. I know time will tell but I thought it’d be fun to document from the beginning and start a guessing game!

The father is a Salmon Faverolles rooster. He has five toes and feathered legs.

My broody hatched three brown and two white eggs.

The white eggs are from my cream Brabanter.

The brown ones could be from:
-Barred Plymouth Rock
-Rhode Island Red
-Sapphire Gem (Barred Plymouth Rock/Blue Plymouth Rock cross)
-Black Australorp
-Barnyard mix
-Golden-laced Wyandotte

From my limited research, I gathered that some of the chicks could have five toes and/or feathered legs, and that the two Brabanter crosses will have some semblance of a crest when they grow up.

There is one black chick (let’s call it B1) with a yellow dot on the head. It also has two white dots between its eyes on either side of the beak. B1 has four toes. I am assuming B1’s mother is the Barred Rock or Sapphire Gem. Is it considered a sex link? And if so, does the dot mean it’s a male?

I think there are two sets of “twins”, and perhaps two of the brown eggs were from the same mother, and I assume the two chicks from the Brabanter will look similar.

There are two yellow chicks (Y1 and Y2), who look like the Faverolles did as a chick. Just plain yellow. At first, I’d thought perhaps these two were from my RIR, as her and the rooster were my only light-colored chicks. Y1 has feathered legs already and four toes. Y2 has four toes.

There are two sort of splotchy chicks (C1 and C2), with brown, black, and yellow coloring. They resembles the chipmunk pattern a bit. I think the only hen I have who offers a chipmunk pattern characteristic is my golden-laced Wyandotte. C1 has five toes. C2 has four toes.

As I said, the barnyard mix, whom I adopted as an adult and does lay brown eggs, is a possible contributor and I have no clue what mix she is. She is very “Australorpy” but with gold flecks on her neck, orange eyes, and white lobes. So I haven’t the slightest clue.

Again, I know time will tell but this is just honestly fun and interesting.

So, only one has five toes, which I know means somewhere down the line my Faverolles isn’t totally pure. Anyway, if anyone has anything to add genetics-wise this early, that’d be awesome. I am going to keep updating this thread as they grow for anyone interested in Faverolles crosses.

The first and second photos are B1.
The third and fourth photos are C1.
The fifth and sixth photos are C2.
The seventh photo is the two yellow chicks (not a great photo but they’re just completely yellow).

The chicks are seven days old today so here’s our one-week update!

Photos 1 & 2 - Y1

Photos 3 & 4 - Y2

Y1 and Y2 - Y1 actually does have five toes, not four, so two of the five chicks have this feature. Y2 does also appear to have feathered legs, albeit much less so than Y1.

Photos 5 & 6 - C1

Photos 7 & 8 - C2

C1 and C2 - No signs of feathered legs on either still. These two are definitely the offspring of the Brabanter. They have the Brabanter beak and basically no combs yet so I fully expect to see v-shaped combs on them. Their little head fluff also shows signs of a tiny poof of a crest.

Photos 9 & 10 - B1 (Dorian)

Oh, sweet little Dorian. I have gone ahead and named him because I am 99.9% sure he’s male. Dorian is coming in exactly as I expected - BARRED.

So the big question remains - who are Y1 and Y2’s mothers?? Or mother? Only time will tell! I’ll update again at two weeks!

Six week update - all five are healthy and really beautiful! I suspect I have two, maybe three, cockerels.

The Brabanter twins, Manon and Rowan - very difficult to tell gender with the v-combs. The four-toed is larger than the five-toed and is quite feisty. Both are growing black crests.

The white twins, Aelin and Chaol, (mother(s) unknown) - definitely have one cockerel (five-toed) and one pullet (four-toed). These two are just gorgeous in my opinion and take a lot after their Faverolles father. The cockerel has quite a bit of black feathering while the pullet has more brown.

The barred one, Dorian - I still suspect this is a cockerel, though he is quite small. Only time will tell.

Wow, the brabanter mixes in particular are very interesting!
