Hello, I am a new SF owner! My husband and I are building another coop for our growing flock. I suggested that we have all the same breed in this coop and when we incubate the eggs we will know what to expect. He agreed and chose the Salmon Faverolle.

We ordered 18 from Cackle Hatchery. One female was dead on arrival and three of the four males were dead by the next day. Very disappointed, especially if I order a small group for some more males, the costs are almost as much as buying a large group.

The ones left seem to be thriving. I do have a question though. Their feet have been getting a lot of poop buildup. I guess with the feathers on their feet, they seem to collect more.

How do you take care of your chicks, and does this happen often? At the moment I have them in a large bin with a couple of inches of micro flake pine shavings. On top of this I have old flannel sheets cut down to the size of the bin which I change every day.

Any thoughts Looking forward to the future. Hopefully one of the females will turn out to be a male.

Using loose dry dirt or sand should keep there feet clean in the run.

Wood shavings in 1 inch layer is better with chicks in a brooder.
They are not in the run yet, so I think when this sheet becomes dirty (in about an hour!) I will go to the pine shavings only. I hate handling them too much as they get frightened and then the whole group is upset. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you don't spend time with them, they will become skittish adult chickens.

Chicks and adults learn from repetitive actions and give them a sense of security.

Also when there adults they will let you pick them up for injuries or medical related incidents.

Just something to consider.

Hand feed them wet food (known as mash). By day 3 my chicks were jumping all over my arms and hands to get to their favorite goody! 😂

Thanks, yes I spend quite a bit of time with them, but maybe try more relaxed time rather than cleaning pasty butts and poopy feet! I have started feeding them hard boiled egg yolk. All my other chicks loved it and still do. These have not acted the same way, but they are eating it. The hatchery said it would help with pasty butt. Had not heard that before.

True. And they are so sweet when tame. My SF, Peanut even falls asleep when I hold her
