Faverolles Thread

My birds do separate into groups according to breed. My birds are free ranging. The Favs grew up with other breeds. They had a Barred Rock roo who loved them. When I removed the Rock rooster the hens started to get picked on. I have quite a few different breeds. My two Orpington girls would not leave them alone. My very sweet Araucana rooster who is such a gentlemen to the ladies started attacking them. He was not trying to mate with them he would just attack them. At my mom's place the Favs did just fine for a good six months and then one of her Marans hen started attacking her Fav hens. They seem to be fine with my mom's Ameracauna and Orloff hens.

You can try them with other breeds just watch them.
Hi, Your group is doing fine, love them ! As Jeanine mentioned there is a great size difference with hatchery and breeder stock. Your girls are almost twice as big and beautiful as my original hatchery group. My Main Man, Kable, is a *HUGH* sweet Roo from Jeanine.

I find my bantam Fav. eggs slightly smaller than LF Fav. which are slightly smaller than a large commercial egg....I do have other Favs, both males & females in mixed living groups with Barny's and Black Ameraucana's (i find them gentler than EE), Dorkings and Buckeyes-in your face friendly. Recently i re-homed a quad of regular Ancona's and the male was very sweet and gentle, the girls aloof.( Now have a separate started group of Rosecombs).

Before i began renovating my chicken yard i would often let everyone out together....it is interesting that if the same breed is from different sources, they know each other & will come together even if they roost with the mixed group they were from...... I try to rearrange/re-home if someone gets dominant and unhealthy for the group.

I have my bantam flock free in the barn & yard behind for now and the 5 boys have split 3-dominant, with 2 separate from the group....girls following both groups..... Jeanine, i still have Blue boy who is bottom of the group but is the smartest and has the best roost. VBG.

Love my birds, Hubby laughs, that i can sit and watch them for hours.

My Favs congregate together too...and the other breeds tend to stick to their groups....

I, too, would get rid of the others if they interferred with the Favs - but I have a couple of alternative coops and acres of space, there should be room for everyone....

Thanks Jeanine, for the input about the hatchery stock. The quad I started with has unknown origins, the lady who sold them to me "inherited" them from a man who was losing his home and couldn't keep them anymore. She loved them, but didn't know where they came from.... I'm trying to learn to judge their quality, mostly by looking at photos here on BYC and comparing them to those girls or the little pullets I got from Laurel. My broody FMs hatched 2 of their eggs about a month ago, both are pullets. I'll watch how they develop.....

I have once again had bad luck with my faverolles
th.gif
- my only two that hatched that were a hen and roo died after reaching 8 weeks. So, I am again looking for a good breeder with good bloodlines to buy some eggs/chicks from when it cools down a bit. Would love to get some suggestions. I would really like to pick them up local within 2-3 hrs away because I really have the worst luck with shipped eggs. I live in Johnson City, TN.

TNBEAR sorry to hear about your losses.

Wish you were closer, I have 4 boys and 3 girls that I need to sell. I alway hate to hear of anyone loseing birds. Our heat has been over 100 for almost a month and the birds aren't in luxuary, but they are doing ok. We are supposed to get a break Sunday. I know i am ready.

Nice babies heritagehabitatfarms! I'll have to post some pics of my more, umm, interesting juveniles. Waiting on this awful heat to go away - one more day of it they say. It was 103 again today! I found one of my mahogany project hens dead in the nest box this afternoon in spite of fans in the coops and ice blocks in the waterers.
