Congrats! That's always so exciting to see that first egg.

i have never seen this before... very cool... how ofter do you clean them out and how long does it take??? do u just use a litter box scoop to do it???

I can't take any credit for the idea - I saw this in the coops thread here on BYC and copied it. It is the best thing I have put in my coops! I spend about 5 minutes per coop every morning and use a kitty litter scoop and a bucket. The "litter" is PDZ stall refresher so I can safely empty my bucket on the compost pile. Greatly reduces the smell and the flies in the coop and also keeps the coop bedding cleaner for MUCH longer because the chickens make most of their mess on the roost at night and aren't in the coop much during the day. I built the first roost like this in April of this year and put fresh shavings in the coop at that time. The bedding still looks great! I'm sure it will get dirtier more quickly during the winter months since the chickens spend more time in there then but it sure looks like my coop cleaning chores are going to be cut in half. Cleaning the poop tray out is WAY easier that mucking out the coop floor! Plus I am spending a lot less on shavings. I am super happy with this set up and now have this type of roost in all my coops but one. As soon as I have the time I will replace that one too. Another plus that I have found with this system is that you can keep a close eye on the worm load. I spotted a tapeworm infestation probably more quickly than I would have otherwise since I actually see the chickens' poop "up close and personal" every day instead of it being out in the pen, yard or mixed into the bedding.

I have 2 LF black pullets that I "created" from a Salmon rooster (Boulanger breeding) crossed with a Blue Orp/Fav hen. Elias's black chick is from one of their eggs.
I also have one Merlin bred black pullet, one Boulanger bred black pullet and two Boulanger bred black cockerels. So I have the beginnings of a small flock of blacks and still have the Blue Orp/Fav hen to use as well.

This is one of my oldest black pullets, hatched in January of this year:

This is my little Boulanger pullet. Shes about 5 months old:

And this my little Merlin pullet, same age:

I am getting very excited about next year's breeding season!
I forgot that he had said he sent you some. Did you get any of his blues before they left?

Very nice glad to see you have blacks. Thought only a one or two people had them.

No I didn't get a single blue chick out of the eggs he sent.

That's why I'm glad I have the blue Fav/Orp hen. She did a pretty good job when I crossed her with the salmon rooster that I got from Dick (that first pic of the black pullet is one of her chicks) so I have hopes I'll get similar results if I breed her to one of the black Boulanger cockerels. . . and maybe I'll get another blue or two.

Hey Patty
There is a show in Frankfort, Ky on October 27th. Maybe you could come over!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am planning on coming to the show because I have never been to one before and would like to see how things work. And look at all the birds of course.

I hope to finally meet you too. I tried to get to the last show that you came to but couldn't escape the leather shop that day. I'm going to mark my calendar and warn my husband ahead of time that I will NOT be available for anything else that day!

Just thought I'd post a pic of a UK mahogany male...posted with permission, owned and photographed by Beanwood Faverolles....looks like a black beard is what you want...
