Faverolles Thread

Thanks, yeah, I wasn't going to hatch any more this year, I may need to put a black cockerel in with her, and do one more small hatch...and then guard her with my life.

The USPS keep threatening that they aren't going to ship live animals any more, a protest might be the thing that makes them stop altogether....nice to think about though....

I've shipped and received many birds, and never had a problem before this....but what a big problem it is....

Unfortunately there is often a lot of poor quality birds at smaller county fairs level. Our fair was so bad I made everyone clean their shoes and put their clothes right into a wash. Half the birds there looked sick- slumped over and damp looking around the face and vent. We only walked through quickly. Even my husband, who only notices a chicken when it is cooked, saw there was something wrong with them. I generally only consider entering the bigger shows that are APA sanctioned, and unless I have something I think might win I do not enter, and I also have a few birds (2 this year) I loan out to the 4-H kids to do their circuit each year which help me measure where I am at... otherwise I do not take my birds off property.

It was pointed out to me that for the 2$ entry fee you get into the fair all days for free. So, you go in, water and feed and then attend the events for 2$! That makes a bit more sense now.
Although there were some 4Hers so....

Trying for pics again.... not good ones but still....

These are UofA babies so they are destined to be better than what I saw at the fair. Just wish I had a broody for them.

Here's the lone survivor...following my d'Uccle around EVERYWHERE...poor thing...can't imagine the trauma of all the other birds in the box dying around her...she immediately attached herself to Clover, and won't leave her side. She's so very sweet!!!

they are adorable... wish mine had not been handled so rough in shipping here, every air-sack was shattered. Years ago I did the fair circuit in New England with my Blue Slate tom turkey. He was nice, but not National level nice, and was always the only Slate exhibited. Anyway he was Grand Champion of every fair I entered him in for 3 years in a row... and I did indeed get into the Fairs for free

I keep just randomly bursting into tears. My PO did some checking into things, and he said that the only thing he could think of is that maybe they went onto the wrong kind of flight and were put into a non-pressurized cargo area...but that wouldn't explain how the one pullet is alive and well. She looks great, comb is nice and red, and she hopped right up and started eating as soon as I took her out of the box...she even laid an egg on the way here...

He said that as long as they arrive within 3 days, there is nothing they can do for me. They arrived in 40 hours.

If it were me I'd file a claim anyway. Did you take pics? Were they tracked and insured? How horrible. I know this has happened to others. Try asking in the general forum or emergencies to see what feedback comes in. One woman opened her box at the po to find them dead and the usps worker cried and helped her figure out a plan

Quote: Yes, everything that is shipped express is automatically tracked and insured. BUT the USPS says they don't insure live animals, and won't refund anything unless they took 3 days or more to arrive. These arrived in 40 hours. The shipper has to file the claim, which she already has. Within 15 minutes of me calling her, she was already at her PO talking to her postmaster. I do have pics of every bird. Thanks.
