Faverolles Thread

Dick, they came from Lund Poultry. The pullet to the left in the first picture is particularly nice. First bird I've had that has tempted me to start showing. The cockerel has enameled ear lobes. How difficult is that to breed out?

A bunch of us have birds with enameled earlobes, so you are not alone!

I have a couple pullets that growls until they lay their egg for the day. It is hillarious!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd probably growl too if I had to do that every day!

Hello everyone. :) I just found this thread and it looks like I have some reading to do. lol. There are some lovely birds posted here. I am enjoying the pics. This breed has interested me since I saw a picture of them on the internet a year ago. I got a mixed flock back in May (my first ever) of 6 girls. I read this breed does not fair well in a mixed flock so I didn't get any. I read they are so docile they get picked on too much by the other birds then I read they get agressive if put in a mxed flock. Is either true? Oh I have a pullet named Andromeda too. We shortend her name to Drama because as a chick everything seemed to be drama to her. lol. She is much quieter and calmer now but the name stuck ;)

Glad you found us!

I can't speak for anyone else's birds or experience, but when I first bought SF, I got 4 adults and added them to 7 adults (French Marans, Ameracaunas, and a Buff Orp) - so it was almost 2 to 1.

The Ameracaunas were the most aggressive in my flock. I called them "hench-hens."

I watched them closely - expecting the worst. I never saw anything out of the ordinary pecking and re-ordering, really. And a couple of months later, the SF hens were hanging out with the Ams and sleeping in a huddle with them

However - I recently bought a couple of pullets, 4 & 6 months old. By then my flock dynamic changed to predominantly SF. When I integrated the 2 new girls, the 4 month old did get picked on for a bit. I made sure I watched out for her. It took several weeks for her to get accepted. She spent a lot of time alone when I let them out to free range - she just hung back at the coop. Occasionally one of the others would come and "talk" to her. Now she's one of them, and a favorite buddy of one young roo

My best advice, is to watch them carefully if you mix a flock - or choose other breeds that are not known to be aggressive types.

HI Kivi, I think it all depends on numbers and the other birds in your flock. There are some breeds that are naturally aggressive and dominant. If you can have more hens, 3 LF Favs may do well. I wouldn't have just one. Like breeds often hang together. It is also a good practice to pick your birds up often to know if someone has good weight. Sometimes its intimidation, parasites or ? It is true that some can be a bit dominant but in general they are known to be docile as a breed.

Well said eliz! It's amazing that they can be really thin, but you won't know it just looking at them.

"Drama" - yeah, we have some of that too ;) That's funny that two of you would name your chickens Andromeda, now I feel like I need to watch the movie again!

I was going to shorten her name to Annie but Drama just fit her better. I also have an EE named Bunny and a Cokckoo Maran Named Marsala. That was my husbands doing. :D
I tried to pick docile breeds for my flock. An EE, a Cockoo Maran, A Golden Comet, A BA, a Buff Orp an a SL Wyndotte who is at the top of the pecking order. I also will be getting 2 maybe 3 Barred Rocks at the end of the month with one being a rooster. I know no one can acurately predict how exceptance of new birds into a flock will go but with that said those with past experience with mixed flocks and this breed may be able to spot possible problems and help. Soooo opinions, anyone see problems with this mix and adding some favorelles? And how many should I add for a nicer transistion? I really dont want to add more than 5 or 6. I'm still pretty new to chickens so sorry if I am being a pest. :) Next question Where can I find them? I know hatcheries have some but what would I really be getting. Sandhill has some and mahogany(sp?) ones too whick I have never seen but I really don't want to order 25 straight run chicks. lol. I babbling sorry. shutting up now. :)

I totally doubt if a hatchery has mahogany. Probably just a really really dark salmon, is what they are.

I have had faverolles that lay from a pretty dark brown to light brown tinted eggs. It varies bird to bird it isn't even a line thing. Faverolles are supposed to have red earlobes and many have enameling on their ear lobes (haven't looked at the girls I have yet will tomorrow) From talking to Dick he said that birds that lay the darker eggs often have red earlobes free of enameling.

I'm not sure what enameling looks like but both Favs have red earlobes, a shade or two lighter than their combs.

OK, I'm going with Clemence sat and left and Dee or Anais (the other Fav) snuck one in later because:

I let the girls out about 8 this morning, there were already 3 eggs. Clemence was squawking and wandering here, there. In the coop, out, back in. In the nest box, back out, in, out. I figured "Here is my chance to finally see what she lays". I put Echo's darker brown egg (laid earlier in the other box) in the box just in case it would help. More in and out. Finally she stayed and came out 10 minutes later. Not a peep, no song. but there was an egg

Left to right:
Not sure, probably a Chantecler. Very smooth and shiny. Peachy brown?
Cubalaya, also smooth. pale peach or rose
Australorp, a little rough. Some small white specks
Absolutely, positively no questions about it: Clemence! Faverolle, a little rough. Darker shade of pale peach or rose than the Cubalaya egg
