Faverolles Thread

It makes me wonder what they think - I mean, I know they have pea-brains, but something must be going on up there!
I like going in when they are laying just to see how they react and to see if I can pick out who is laying what egg( some come out different than others).. I don't do it daily but it is an interesting experience. They are each distinctly different.

I'm giving Ameraucanas a third try, since I want some blue eggs, but MAN! They freak at everything! Not at all like my meat breeds, who act like they're on valium half the time. Either that, or the sight of me does nothing for them if I come into the run empty handed. They won't move out of my way, but just stand there and look up at me like "what?" The Ameraucanas, in the meantime, are running around like a chicken...well, you know.

I have not been around Ameraucanas but our Araucanas are extremely laid back, highly observant, and SMART. the only stupid thing our girl does is she is a feather picker and loves the Favs beards. A couple of the girls and our roo seem to enjoy to "grooming" she gives them and will just sit for the "trim".

Doesn't make for pretty beards.

I have to say with the Ameraucanas I believe their temperament has a bit to do with what line they come from. My first Ameraucana I had was extremely flighty. He turned me off of the breed. I just happened to get a few hatching eggs from a different breeder. They are some of the friendliest birds I have. My little pullet is always following me and gets jealous if I am holding someone else. They are Wheatens. I have heard that the temperaments vary with the different color varieties also. My flighty one was a Splash. You may want to avoid the Silvers. They tend to be flighty. Highly recommend an Ameraucana.

I have a small group of black and blue LF Ameraucana's and they just fall in with everyone else.....I just received a new young cockeral who is a real sweetheart and maybe the most well adjusted bird i have ever received next to my youngest Fav. boy....I really have more trouble not stepping/tripping on everyone...but usually don't try to catch/handle anyone except after dark so no one really worries about me.....

Thanks, but I'll be doing some breedings this year that might go against the grain. TYPE is number one. We can't lose sight of that. Read the Standard of Perfection...if possibe, once a day till it's ingrained in your brain. We all know there is no perfect bird out there. Breed pluses to minuses realizing not all hatched from the breeding will carry what your looking for......but if you can get a few. Again, I'll say is read the Standard and develope the EYE..
Dick

Thank you for the advice, Dick.... I'll work on that. Over the years I developed "the eye" for horse confirmation, but chickens seem a lot more difficult!

Can anyone tell me if LF Salmon Faverolles tend to go broody?

I can tell you that my 2 from Ideal did and they have no fertile eggs to hatch! One sat all day in an empty nest box. She hisses at me when I reach in to take her off the nest. She was on an egg this morning when I opened the coop but left when I took the egg from her. Don't know if she's figured out sitting in an empty box is of no value or just couldn't stand to miss the morning treats.

I am hopeful it is the former.
