Faverolles Thread

Rock N' Faverolles :

pasofinofarm, do you have any pictures of your Blue Salmon Faverolles?

David

Here is a link the the page on this thread where Melissa posted some pictures of her flock of whites/blue salmons/ and salmons. From these pictures I think it will be hard to tell which hens are salmon vs Blue salmon.
Hope this helps.

With all that said I have to say that sometimes you just get lucky... I had one of 24 Ameraucanas hatch once and got Uno... I have never regretted him.

Well I guess not!

He's gorgeous!

I just found out the breeder of the new bantam hens that everyone likes so much is actually younger then mw now that hard to do ha ha. I was also informed that my two hens were fathered by an very nice cockerel from Dick bourlanger!

I have decided after I reorganize the breeding pens I am not going to sell anymore eggs as the chicks will be outcrosses and I don't know what I will get yet from them. If anyone want to join in on the outcrosses PM me. As the plan stands now the pens will be Oxley Salmon Cockerel in with Bourlanger hens and Leisha Comer Hen. Then the Leisha Comer Blue Salmon Cockerel would be in with three hens from Nikki a blue salmon and two salmons and the Jeff Oxley pullet. Things are changing by the minuet and nothing is set in stone but I am defently not going to be selling alot of eggs until I know what is going to come out of them.

David I can go out and get better pics for you... maybe some posed pics. The ones I have here were all just candid shots. I have some very beautiful Blue Salmon Hens.

Peter- again thank you for sharing your knowledge. It is nice to have so much experience to draw on. I have made some associations with chick down color and adult color. I am sure someone with a stronger knowledge of genetics can tell me why but the birds that will wind up with the deep mahagony color have a dark red neck ring. Whites have white wing tips.

The wattles on my Blue Salmon Roo are a non issue for me. They have never been seen in one of his offspring with my hens... Of course we have very heavy beards in all of our hens. When he is in 'general popualtion' he doesn't get any breeding time at all really. He is especially valuable ot me in that he does not carry recessive white (something I introduced into my flock with the Pontius' birds) so I am using him to sort out which of my hens carry the gene and to be able to set up a breeding pen that does not produce white recessives.

My adult whites are second and third generation whites. They breed white 100% and true. I still get white chicks from some of the Salmons (as stated above) and these will sometimes develop a slight buff color as older birds. I am only breeding the whites that have stayed white now that they are over a year old. I really appreciate breeding older birds as well. There can be changes even later... I have seen white tail feathers come in after first molt in my Golden Cuckoo roos that were not there as younger birds. So it is good for me to at least be through that before deciding if I want to use a roo for extensive breeding.

Peter do you know if anyone has ever worked on a Crele Faverolles? I heard cuckoo had been done so it would not be too much of a stretch.

Edited... because I can not find a spell checker here anywhere and I am a poor speller.

So you have an all white pen Melissa? Or will you put the white girls in with the white rooster later in spring? I may only have one white now that I look back at it hope I am not able to sex them at this age because so far it looks like lots of boys

We will see in two weeks. Are my chicks from the Salmon and Blue salmon boy over blue salmon and salmon and white hens? I would love to see some posed pictures I am planning on going through and taking an individual picture of each member of my flock I think it would be nice to keep track of each one and have you guys critique them.

Thanks,
Henry

I had a white only pen last fall and did some hatching from the whites which are the whites you see now. Since I got white recessives I sort of thought 'If God gives you lemons, make lemonaide!' So I did!

The Whites that were from Salmons are with my friend John. He went to the Bluebonnet Classic with us last month to get a feel for showing which is where I think his heart is. I am also going to hatch out a bunch of whites from these whites 3rd and 4th generation whites this fall. During the winter I keep all the Favs housed together for warmth and ease of care. I work full time days and for 3 months or more a year I go to work and come home in the dark so I am often feeding chickens by flashlight. Keeping them in large groups makes it easier for me to manage that time. I also milk two cows every night, strain and bottle milk, make cheese and yogurt and pack hatching eggs.... Don feeds pigs and goats and rabbiits and doves and dogs and the three ponds of fish before he heads off to his night job. During spring and summer with longer days I can decide who I want to breed to who and get them into individual cages. By this time it is often too hot to ship hatching eggs anyway down here in southeast Texas so I do my own hatching for replacements then as well as supplying the local folks with chicks. Then in the fall I evaluate how adults have done and make decisions about who will over winter. who will be sold off and who will be sent to freezer camp. This is also when we butcher hogs and send a steer in for beef. I spend weeks canning and preserving every autumn as the veggie garden comes in, fruit is harvested and honey is collected. During that time I do not have time to deal with hatching eggs so hatch for myself. The egg thing takes a lot of time. Auctions, emails, questions, collecting, precandling, wrapiing, packing, following up. It is equal to a part time job. So life here is about chickens... but not all about chickens, if you get my meaning.

Would you like some chicks from the all white pens this fall Henry?
