Faverolles Thread

Man they must be something then!! Lol

After reading all the accounts on the "my chicken pecked my eye" thread I'm just very conscious of it, especially with the kids.

They really are the sweetest things aren't they. One of ours would sit on my arm then hunker down and roost there. Really sweet but wayyyyy too heavy these days :)

Yes I'd be terrified if one tried to peck my eye. I had a very aggressive chicken once, she would fly at me and leave awful bruises when she pecked me, I would wear goggles in the run because someone told me to be very careful with a chicken like that and she may go for my eyes if I bent down. After a while I had to rehome her because it got way too much and she completely upset and bullied my flock, she lives with someone who has a cockerel and is much better behaved now.

I absolutely love favs, I dont see myself without them now. I think Favs and Bantam Orps are my favourite breeds, but the ex-batts will always have a place in my heart too. I can't wait for mine to be fully grown and chunky hahaha!

My little ones are 2 weeks old. I think there are 2 pullets and a cockerel.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I will definitely go to Springfield in January; I haven't been for awhile. Looking forward to meeting you. Yes, if anyone has chicks, that would be great too.

Meanwhile, do you know of any good history of the Faverolles here in the US, how they came over, what lines and traits breeders are working with, the differences in "Salmon" coloration (I've read that the French are snowier than the darker German?), body shape, etc. Are there any really key standard photos you might be able to refer me too?

I'd love to be educated! Thanks again for your responses --

Hi all, Starting a small backyard flock this year I was lucky enough to find a farm with some Salmon Faverolle chicks. Now at about 5 months old, they have wonderful dispositions and are probably the prettiest chickens I have. The pictures just down do her justice. Being new at this though, I'm very interested in hearing opinions on how close my girls are to the breed standard. I'm learning from scratch here... so to speak. I appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!

Wow, I vaguely remember that subject popping up way back in the thread somewhere.....if I remember right, it was a little more than I could comprehend at the time, I think there was a lot of genetics jargon in the discussion. Maybe somebody will remember what post number it was.....

Hi there, pretty girl! If you'd like some pointers, maybe you could get a good pic of her head, especially the comb - and her toes too....She looks very sweet

Is anyone entering their Favs in the calendar competition?

I'm going to get some photos of them today or tomorrow, and one of my bantam orp :D

I have actually found mine to be more resistant.

Did you have a specific disease in mind?

Respitory... The Roo and a hen or 2 have come down with heavy breathing and the roo's one eye is swollen shut and goop was coming out. It's gotten better but... All the diseases I've seen that cause that scare the crap out of me!! Sure don't want carriers of whatever it is. :/.

Hi Lunar Rain --

I have some newbies also that I'm trying to sex. One day I'm certain they are all pullets, the next I'm fairly convinced all cockerels! Do you have any other wing pics you'd be willing to add? Those were very helpful...!
