Faverolles Thread

I live in the suburbs so I have very very limited numbers. I also only have three small pens and my parents don't want me to build more. At this moment I have 2 cockerels and 9 hens and pullets. Plus two pullets in the brooder and 3 small chicks. I am also getting a pair from Leisha next week. I am selling a trio of the hattricksilkies birds so I will have 8 hens and 2 cockerels. I will be hatching a bunch this spring. But the honest truth is the most birds I can have at once is about 20 and only 2-3 cockerels! I hope to be able to exoand a ton later on because right now I am very limited breeding wise.

You can disagree, that's fine. I'm just saying, I definitely would not recommend breeding two birds with DQ's together if you can avoid it. I've used birds with DQ's for breeding too, but still advise against it if it can be helped.

hi Peter, when trying to get colors into the favs, did you and other breeders cross in other breeds to get them? if so, what were the breeds and colors you worked with? i had heard about using the blue orpington to get the blue into the favs but i know that they had issues with the lack of the 5th toe showing up (throwback of the orps). i was thinking it would probably help to stabilize the 5th toes if i could take the colored orpingtons and cross them over dorkings and then crossing the 5th toed, light legged offspring onto the favs.

as for my 2 little chicks, i had a male last year hatch out that had the same issue with it's salmon color showing in the upper wings and it deceived me until it feathered out more. these 2 newbies are about 2 days younger than 3 cochinX that are in with them, and those 3 cochinX have much longer wing feathers right now. so i know what you are talking about that the male coloring may appear later on it. here's crossing my fingers that my 2 are pullets (or i have one of each!)

I have only one Blue Salmon rooster and 2 Salmon hens.In same pen are hens from diferent breeds.Broody hatched some chicks and I used them for meat. What I notised is that even crosses have more feathers then other breeds

From the information I got from Dick and Gayle, the two breeders, the Blue Orps were used to get the blue color in Faverolles. Alot of work was needed to improve on it when I hatched out a batch of Blue Faverolles from Pontious and I was very disappointed and gave away the chicks. So that was the end of it.

Another BYCer had improved the Blue Favs, she is listed somehwere on this thread. If you want some, go and check her out.

Be sure that the feathers on Fav legs are not Cochin-like...that is a real DQ.

Defently true! Do you have any pictures of the birds we could tell you if they are close to standard or if they have to many feathers. Also I just love looking at pictures of Faverolles

I got the birds I am going to show tested for the show today. The Tester who also runs the show said they have a chance of doing well. I am excited! I am showing a pair of blue salmons and two Salmon pullets and one Salmon Hen.
