Faverolles Thread

You do not need Sussex for your project-Sand Hill's Mille Leghorns are white skined, short leged, plumper then reg leghorns.

Well, thank you for that information! I wonder what they've been crossed with, as Leghorns are supposed to be yellow-skinned! (That will be way cool if I don't have to buy any more chickens to get my project started!) Does anyone know anything about Sand Hill's Mille Fleur Leghorns, where they came from and what they were bred out of?

Kathleen

I have no idea, but keep me posted on what they look like when you get them!!

I agree with both Kathleen and Henry about just keeping one breed. There are just too many beautiful breeds and varieties of chickens out there! How can anyone decide?

I'm going to try to have my cake and eat it too (or maybe I should say chicken instead of cake?)by having a laying flock made up of a variety of breeds and colors as well as having a breeding flock of LF Faverolles. It looks like I have 4 White Favs and two Blue Salmons (not positive about those). I'm not really sure about the sexes yet. I'll have to post some new pics and see if the "Fabulous Fav Forum" can help with positive ID.

I feel really blessed that I have both space (5 acres) and an enabler husband who thinks my hobby is great.

Thats great! I didn't get any whites but I think 4 salmon/blue salmon cockerels and 3 beautiful pullets! Cant wait to see pictures of them. I don't have room for Std breeds so I am going to find good homes for everyone as pairs or as a large group. The brooder is getting stinky ( I clean it every day

) and more chicks are hatching! I have 5 fav bantams from ugly duckling and 8 Ameraucana bantams due on the 25th.

I am having a very hard time picking which other breeds to get so I think I am going to get a few of each. I hope to get at least 2 black ameraucana bantam pullets and I am hopeing for or thinking about two wyndotte pullets and two polish bantam pullets and then hatching some silver penciled rock bantam eggs and keeping a few pullets. I think that will make a great mixture of colors and sizes. I was thinking about mottled Duccles but now am considering one or two blue or blue mottled bantma cochins.

I am only going to be keeping the Leisha cockerel as my main flock rooster and then 8 faverolles hens and pullets. I can fit up to 15 bantams in my coops and runs. I will probably end up selling off 2/3 more of the original pullets and keeping their daughters. This is such a whirlwind process but its all about having fun and enjoying my chickens which I am defently doing. Now I am headed out to let everyone out into the new dry and snow free runs!

Got some new photos now that its a little nicer around her wanted to show you guys how my setup works. My chickens have been locked in for a while but now the runs are cleared they are out frolicing again! I will post them later this afternoon the grass in my yard has even stayed a little green

I think I lost one of the hens from the Oxley rooster pen today to a fox I wasn't paying attention and didn't lock them up soon enough. She was such a sweet girl but that always happens when you free range I will be more careful next time and most of my birds will be in the more secure runs in the future I just wanted them to get some fresh air. I have new chicks hatching though from Uglyduckling.

sorry to hear about that Henry. i just recently heard about a local loosing some of their flock to a bear. it's not a good thought but i am happy i moved mine up to the garage for the winter time. my shed/coop probably wouldn't have survived a bear ripping the doors off it. i have not seen the fox i was told is in our area but i know i have an owl, and there certainly are hawks galore, but i haven't let my girls and boys free range without me out there working on stuff. i may do that tomorrow to give them some fresh air and better exercise while helping me prep the gardens at the same time!

I usually let them free range when I am working outside in the morning. I might prep the garden tommorow if the snow is gone. I am sad about losing her but it kept me on my toes first loss in 9 months besides babies. I am thinking about putting the oxley pullet in with the other birds she is looking really really good now. But I don't want to leave the boy alone.
