Faverolles Thread

Eliz: Is there any requirements regarding showing at a county level first (any particular placement needed?) before being able to show at a state fair?
How much does body (trapezoid shape/broad keel) appearance versus comb, toes, muff/beard, coloring play into the over all placing?
If you are considering showing you should invest in a copy of the APA Standard of Perfection. Not only does it contain the Faverolles standard, the first 40 pages or so is also valuable for all poultry. It lists definitions, pictures of defects and disqualifications as well as ideal images, color definitions, how the standard should be interpreted by judges, listing of points, and so on.

I wish they had a like button for posts! Thanks for all the great information and insights. I would like to show at the local county fair next year (I have attended several and with friends that were showing). I am still trying to decide my path with breeding these in the spring as I don't like culling. however, I have heard from many that culling doesn't mean killing it can also mean re homing for layers/flock protectors. Being that we live in the country with many chicken owners and land it may be easier in my situation. However, I currently have 8 boys that I will be rehoming before spring-so I will see how that goes.

Most of my current SF stock comes from breeders that show Faverolles. Except for my 1st hatchery stock Fav who is a quirky sweetheart but the worst quality you could possibly imagine LOL so she remains my quirky pet only. She has one HUGE wattle that is centered under her chin and then some 1/4 inch partial wattle on one side, 4 toes on one foot 5 on the other, same salmon with dark smudged coloring over entire body, very little feathering on feet, comb is a mess! I really should take a picture of her also and send to the hatchery side by side with the picture they have displayed.

Excellent idea! I am looking on Amazon now and it seems there are various options for this? Is 2010 the most recent version?

Amazing they must be the most affectionate chickens ever
Mine won't be put down, love cuddles make the sweetest purring sound
And look stunning
Apparently hey lay well through the winter

Down side, will be bottom of the pecking order
Fragile health wise

So with the fragile heath thing, do they always catch the bug going around?

I am thinking about getting these cute chickens! Do you guys know if they are sweet, not a bossy bird, lays lots of eggs.. Etc?
In most cases they are not bossy. They do tend to lay eggs more on the medium size, not sure if that makes a difference. I haven't found mine to be fragile.

My 12 week old pullet is the sweetest little thing, she was very scared as a chick and I had to chase her to catch her. So I thought she would be really really shy, which in some ways she is, she still doesn't like being held but she will let me pick her up she just gets very upset when I hold her and will run and hide, but when I talk to her she will peep and then come out of hiding lol. She likes to hang out next to me and if I have my laptop she will jump up to play with it, she comes when I call her and her little run is so cute! She doesn't get bullied and she actually will challenge the rooster back before submitting and she challenges the other pullets, so she is not weak. I have 3 more baby Salmon Faverolles and they are very sweet chicks. But actually all my chickens so far are so sweet and friendly, I don't have any bullies or mean chickens.
I love the fluffy faces of both the Easter Eggers and Faverolles so I got 3 more of each. I ordered my newest brood from Meyers and so far happy with the quality, temperament and health. My, My pet chicken order was great too, but the Faverolles are of poor color quality there, and the one I got, is so far from the right color, she feathered much slower then any of my chick that I had with her and slower then the new ones I have now which are keeping up with the rest of the chicks, except and cockerel he is slower which is normal and I can tell he is a cockerel already at 1 week old.
I think you will be happy with this breed!
