Buff: i wish more had hatched for you! here's hoping they are all pullets! if Henry was right the chances of pullets from Apollo's line is a good one! out of 9 eggs from Apollo i hatched last month 7 were pullets!

i just read back a few posts and noticed you had issues with the 4th and 5th toes being fused?! i'll have to watch out for that! the chicks i hatched have been fine other than not a lot of toe fluff. do you know if any of Zeus eggs hatched from those 3 that made it? i've been using broody pullets/hens to hatch eggs so i'm wondering if that could have anything to do with why i haven't noticed any foot issues yet. i used to have toe issues trying to hatch other breeds when i used an incubator with a turner so i gave those up. i read that could be where some toe issues could come from too. but i do know that genetics can play a major factor in deformities and now i will be keeping an eye on any more chicks i'm hatching. i got a better hatch rate using the broodies and it keeps me limited to what i can hatch and keep at one time!

to anyone else that can help me: just out of curiousity now that the toe issue was brought up, i noticed one of the chicks i hatched has a crack on the side of it's beak, right near it's nasal area. it looks like it has healed but i am just wondering if this could also be a genetic defect, maybe soft beak or maybe she got stepped/stomped on by someone in the coop while running under feet? she's the sweetest one out of the bunch so i'm sure i will be keeping her till it has fully healed and maybe till she is old enough to lay eggs. if i keep her permanently she'd just be a layer and not for breeding if it is genetic.

I had my radiation treatment yesterday afternoon. I am now on steroids and vicotin and pepcid for heartburn. I will have a headache for a couple weeks because of the swelling. But as of right now taking it easy and trying to stay cool

I will send in my dues to the club ASAP. If we were closer I would take you up on one of those roos right away, Cloverleaf! I think Jamestown is only about 1 1/2 hours or so away from me, and if I'm able to get ahold of Ron Patterson (and he has any available) I'm going to try him.

I don't see where he has a website though

Maybe his number is listed.

P.S. Nice Birds Henry! Too bad I don't have more room for blues.....

Send me a pm and I'll send you his email address

yes they do have fused 4&5 toes on at least one foot, one only has four toes on one of his feet. I think the major foot issues from incubation are either deformities due to high temps, ie. extra legs, etc or ortho problems due to humidity issues, ie. curled toes and spraddle legs. But I may have read wrong or not remembering right??!! I thought the toe issue was genetic but weird that you haven't had the same problems?
I am not sure if any of zeus' made it. Only 1 of his eggs made it to LD and I forgot to look after hatching. Duh!

I'm out of town for the weekend so I'll get some pics of their feet when I get back.

fused toes are genetic. but if it's all you have to work with take it to the next steps. about the only way to breed out of it is to either bring in other stock or breed quantities and take the best toes with each following generation. cross chicks will have fused toes mainly when crossed with a four toed breed. definitive fifth toes should follow eventually. choose one thing about your birds to improve on and then as that single charcteristic improves to acceptable move on. -)
