3 hatched. 5 made it to lockdown. 1 pipped multiple times in one spot and never made it. The other never pipped. Super cute chickies are doing good
Buff: i wish more had hatched for you! here's hoping they are all pullets! if Henry was right the chances of pullets from Apollo's line is a good one! out of 9 eggs from Apollo i hatched last month 7 were pullets!
i just read back a few posts and noticed you had issues with the 4th and 5th toes being fused?! i'll have to watch out for that! the chicks i hatched have been fine other than not a lot of toe fluff. do you know if any of Zeus eggs hatched from those 3 that made it? i've been using broody pullets/hens to hatch eggs so i'm wondering if that could have anything to do with why i haven't noticed any foot issues yet. i used to have toe issues trying to hatch other breeds when i used an incubator with a turner so i gave those up. i read that could be where some toe issues could come from too. but i do know that genetics can play a major factor in deformities and now i will be keeping an eye on any more chicks i'm hatching. i got a better hatch rate using the broodies and it keeps me limited to what i can hatch and keep at one time!
to anyone else that can help me: just out of curiousity now that the toe issue was brought up, i noticed one of the chicks i hatched has a crack on the side of it's beak, right near it's nasal area. it looks like it has healed but i am just wondering if this could also be a genetic defect, maybe soft beak or maybe she got stepped/stomped on by someone in the coop while running under feet? she's the sweetest one out of the bunch so i'm sure i will be keeping her till it has fully healed and maybe till she is old enough to lay eggs. if i keep her permanently she'd just be a layer and not for breeding if it is genetic.
