The small roo from last time (I thought I had gotten a front view of him, but guess I didn't, I'll have to get one tomorrow if it stops raining long enough)

the "medium" boy...

The big boy that didn't have the white triangles last time I took pics, but now does...

Also have to add that the 3 chicks I have in the brooder that are about 3 weeks old are from this roo x the pullet from Melissa's line. 1 girl, 1 dark boy, 1 boy with LOTS of salmon coloring on him right now that's alot bigger...

Hopefully I'm off to the Congress show tomorrow morning. Suppose to get two inches of snow tonight and a possible four inches tomorrow.

When you show... do you take your best birds? or keep them in reserve to protect them from injury/illness/loss at the show? I have one nice Roo I'd like to take to the PPBA show in Stockton, and one nice pullet from Dick's eggs, plus a cockerel from my MacCallum hen & 'Boulanger style' roo. But if anything happened to them I'd be in a pickle.
Also, this show has Judges from both coasts, using the APA SOP.

Its a chance you take. It happened to me years ago. This is why I said I was leary of going to the Crossroad show. If you take them you should separate them when you get back to make sure they didn't catch anything and it transfers to the rest of your flock. Years ago I leaned this the hard way. I put my birds back with the flock and it was devastating. I had birds dropping left and right. When I go to the Crossroads I won't be taking my breeding stock. I don't want to chance it. I'll be taking cockerels and pullets. I love that male in the first picture, if he needs a home let me know. HA

In Laurieks' photo of Claudel - is this the amount of mahogany you are wanting to see? I don't think I've seen one with that much before, not that I've exactly seen lots and lots of Fav roos. But is this what you mean when you say the roos need more mahogany in the saddle?

I must say, I am learning so much just basically "lurking" around this thread. I thought hatchery birds were no-no s . But I am seeing that even they have a place. That being said, Dick do you have a hatchery preference???? Thank you, Junebug in Va.

I haven't actually researched it yet. I remember Henry had a few, I need to find out where he got them. If I was to do this I would make one breeding pen to cross my line into the hatchery stock. I would have to evaluate the young from this breeding. Usually when you breed birds from two different lines the young will be bigger than the parents. The only problem with doing this is you don't know what is lurking in the background of the hatchery stock. I would have to be very careful here. Disqualifications that took me years to get rid of, I wouldn't want to instill back into my line. Again, my birds still don't breed perfect because of the diversity in breeding I have done over the years. I feel that one of the best lines out there is Peter's birds. I think the last new blood infusion he put into his line was Britboy whom he got from me. This is why I love this breed. The challenges are never ending, well, for me anyways.
