Faverolles Thread

How sweet..

I have a question. I am new to chickens this year. I have a salmon fav hen, she's the sweetest thing. She has been laying consistently, about 4-5 eggs a week. I have not had an egg from her in 5 days. She doesn't seem uncomfortable, so I dont' think she is egg bound again. I check all the bushes where she hangs out just in case she decided she didn't like the nest box... although, she's been laying in there no problems for a few months. She's only a year and a half, thru her molt already, so I know thats not it. I know with fall coming she'll start to slow down, but nothing in 5 days... should I worry?

IF you can come down into the US, you can transport "eating eggs" back over the border with you...

Ohh i know that. It's if i well ever get to the us lol. Even though i live in NS, now we have to go to NB, then into maine.

I do have a good friend that has brought "eating eggs" over a few times, gonna send her a msg.

You have Blue Salmon Bantams don't you?

Yep, they are salmon and blue salmon hens in with a blue salmon cock right now, I've gotten a few blue salmon offspring, they are mostly salmons, especially the boys. I got one awesome blue salmon cockerel this year:

I my self would not worry yet. I have often had hens (not faverolles) stop laying for a few weeks. It could also be due to lack of light. To hot etc, etc, etc all kinds of things could be effecting her laying

Yes. Unless she is spending a lot of time in a nest box and growling at you, in which case she's broody. You say "again"...she's been egg bound before?? That makes me worry. If she were mine and has a history of egg binding, and isn't broody, I'd take an xray and look for an egg... Good luck with her!!!

my faverolles are not bad, but the cock has a fair bit of white leaking on his breast. Although i have the feeling that may go with this line. Beause i have only seen hens showed, and no cocks from this breeder

Sounds good - just let me know...I will be replacing the blue salmon cock with salmon boys eventually (they are still really young), but there will still be blue salmon girls in there for a while...and I may end up keeping this blue salmon cockerel for the breeding pen even though I WAS planning on steering away from the blue salmons...

Yes, she came out of molt, laid her first post molt egg, then was bound up with her second, so I brought her in and gave her a bath, she wasn't that happy about it, and then put her in carrier, with a warm light and food and water and yogurt for the night, and the next day 2 eggs. Boy was she relieved. She hasn't been even going into the next box, she hasn't even been laying down in the yard in lay position like she was the last time. I took her off her roost last night and check her bottom and vent, and all seems good. Didn't feel any eggs lodged... But I don't know chickens well enough yet... SO. But I am learning.

Well, I'd just keep an eye on her. Having a history of egg binding can make her prone to it in the future, even though it sounds like that was just a case of her canal narrowing during molt.

I am thinking I might bring her in for the night and give her another warm bath. She's all dirty and muddy from the rain, but none of my flock seems to think staying in the coop during a rain storm is a good idea...
This is her and Mr. Fluffers behind her.
