Faverolles Thread

Actually, it is Best of Breed when there is only one variety in the class. I had two other birds that got Best Variety in other classes. (Because they were the only ones of that variety!) And, since I was the only one in both classes, I was the big winner. Still, it was worth the drive to hang with Dick Boulanger. He critiqued my birds, and gave me advice on the four pullets I had in the car. The man's just a mountain of info. I wonder if he'd adopt me?

Lots of great comments on the favs from other people, which was nice. Sometimes when you have the only one in a class, people tend to walk right by them. I was stopped twice by people as I was cooping out the LF pullet, and several people paused to look and listen to Dick as he was checking over her on Saturday. He did the most amazing thing! My bantam cock had these huge spurs that I had been grinding down - or trying to - with a stone on my drill, and he just twisted them right off! A little bleeding, but there were brand-new, much smaller spurs left behind. I've never seen anything like it! I did see many people checking him out later that day and Sunday - I hope they weren't just looking at the blood on the litter. Still, I had many people stop me whenever I went to check his food and water, which was nice.

Congrats Mary!

I'm trying to figure out what I want to get on the waiting list for. Are you going to be hatching all of your varieties? I really like the blue salmon bantams, but I also really like the LF Salmon, and the blue/black...I guess I like them all

I guess it would make it easier if I knew whether or not they'll all be available ...decisions, decisions.

They will all be available at some point. The LF are taking a break and not laying right now. The salmon / blue salmon are sporadic right now also, our weather has been CRAZY, back and forth between freezing and warm, it's throwing them off a bit. The blue / black bantams are available now, and should continue to be available through spring (I have enough different age groups that they should be pretty steady for the season).

Thanks - although I feel weird saying that when it's like I won just for showing up!

Daphne was there, too, and only her tail condition kept her from winning BoB. The light pullet that beat her was in superior condition, I must admit.

I know what you mean. The last show I was at, I won Ch. AOSB with a LF black Ameraucana pullet...she was the only bird in the entire class...LOL BUT she was amazing and I really would've liked to see how she would do with some competition...

It's been weird weather here too. Really warm December, then 5 for highs all weekend. Yet all but 3 of my original hens are laying. Bantam eggs everywhere, pullet LF eggs, even my LF blacks haven't skipped a beat all winter. Watch them all quit when I want to set up the breeding pens.

So I am in the process of deciding about what two cockerels to keep. My boys came from Cloverleaf. One boy I had planned on keeping met with an unfortunate end. My fault for having him in a pen that was not secure. He was penned with my other keeper. Raccoon attack, I believe. My other boy survived. The one that survived, Lucien. Has great toe placement and a nice comb. I think his color is not bad. He seems light to me in build. He is thinner than his brothers. Is his type OK? His chest and back is not as wide as his brother's Frodo. #1

Frodo has bad toe placement not too nice of a comb, but he is huge compared to Lucien. I think his color is not so good. I am not sure but I think he has split wing. I hope I am calling it the right thing.

I will keep Frodo even if I do not use him for breeding. He is my favorite bird so far. #2

The two I had not planned on keeping are bigger than Lucien, but not the size of Frodo. One has pretty good toes so so comb, but he is very pretty. Much more fluffy than Lucien. fuller beard and I think better type. Who would you use? 1? 2? or 3?

I'd use #3 and keep Lucien for a back up.

That's funny, I have a Lucien too. My boy is from Dick Boulanger's stock. When this pic was taken, my other rooster, Vincent was still living with Lucien and had decided to show him who was boss. Needless to say, they have separate quarters now.

I don't know how much he weighs but he is getting pretty wide. These photos were taken at about 6 months.

Now would someone explain "split wing" to me please.

Don't count out the one you think has split wing just yet. They are still young. This guy had what looked like split wing on one side when he was about the same age as your boys. He does not, it disappeared when he molted into adult plumage.

Well, I'll post his picture once I figure out how!
