I've only been a faverolles "mom" for 6 weeks now, but I'm in love with these guys! I bought my 6 LF salmon faverolles as SR from Estes Hatchery. (Hindsight being 20/20, I would have looked for a breeder. BUT -- these guys are super sweet and I'm only looking for eggs at this point. No showing or breeding!!) Out of the 6, four are definitely pullets. However one of the girls has yellow (!) legs now. Has regular SF coloring, 5 toes, muff/beard, etc. but obviously "something" must be lurking in her background! LOL. I'm completely stumped by the remaining 2 chicks though. I posted to the breed/gender thread to see if anyone has any ideas, but thought I'd come straight to the experts for their opinions.

So, are these two roos or just VERY poorly colored pullets?

Ha Ha! Love the names!! Puzzle is a boy. Quiz might be a REALLY dark (almost Mahogany) pullet, but I'm guess is going to turn into a boy on you as well. The boys change A LOT from the time they are this age until they are done.

A topic of discussion on the British Faverolles Society FB page has been egg size. So, I decided to weigh some eggs today, after collecting a particularly large egg...

The pullet eggs I collected today were around 53-58 grams. The average hen eggs I've been saving this week are 65-69 grams. The monster egg I collected today was 90 grams! (I'll be cracking it open later to see if it is indeed a double yolker)

How big are your eggs?

i haven't weighed mine but my one hen lays smaller eggs than most of my other LF breeds...

i guess i'm thinking the opposite. they look like off colored pullets to me. the color in the primaries (long wingtip feathers) are looking all salmon. if they were going to be cockerels i would think they would have white on the leading edge and more black towards the trailing edge of each primary feather.

I have seen some awful off colored hatchery pullets in past years - including some that were half black! I'm not sure what they did to get such awful coloring.

I think I need a bigger brooder.

I put a pile of eggs from 2 new pens (one salmon, one project) in the incubator, figuring several would be clears. Wrong! I think 90-95% have hatched so far, and I'm now waiting for stragglers.

Caitenji, one of my hatchery pullets looked like your darkest bird when she was feathering out too-- mine is 100% hen. You might just have some poorly colored pullets (I'll cross my fingers for ya!).

Here is a photo of her when she was about the same age as yours. It's hard to tell in this photo, but her breast feathers came in black too. Her beard came in very very dark brown, nearly black.
