Faverolles Thread

I'm not sure what enameling looks like but both Favs have red earlobes, a shade or two lighter than their combs.

OK, I'm going with Clemence sat and left and Dee or Anais (the other Fav) snuck one in later because:

I let the girls out about 8 this morning, there were already 3 eggs. Clemence was squawking and wandering here, there. In the coop, out, back in. In the nest box, back out, in, out. I figured "Here is my chance to finally see what she lays". I put Echo's darker brown egg (laid earlier in the other box) in the box just in case it would help. More in and out. Finally she stayed and came out 10 minutes later. Not a peep, no song. but there was an egg

Left to right:
Not sure, probably a Chantecler. Very smooth and shiny. Peachy brown?
Cubalaya, also smooth. pale peach or rose
Australorp, a little rough. Some small white specks
Absolutely, positively no questions about it: Clemence! Faverolle, a little rough. Darker shade of pale peach or rose than the Cubalaya egg

enameled means white

That's funny that two of you would name your chickens Andromeda, now I feel like I need to watch the movie again!

I have no idea what movie you would be referencing. My daughter named the girls. Think Greek mythology. Echo, Persephone, Andromeda.
Though I see her every day, Persephone must be in Hades at the moment because the earth sure isn't fruitful! But my chickens are

I tried to pick docile breeds for my flock. An EE, a Cockoo Maran, A Golden Comet, A BA, a Buff Orp an a SL Wyndotte who is at the top of the pecking order.
Soooo opinions, anyone see problems with this mix and adding some favorelles?

Some people I know got rid of a Golden Comet because it was aggressive toward people (don't know how it fared with the other chickens). Point being, each chicken is an individual.

My girls all came in the same box from Ideal Poultry, 2 days old. Whatever pecking order they have evolved without introducing new personalities into the mix. In "sort of" order, I would rank them (bottom to top):
Cubalaya - if for no other reason that they are smaller than the other girls by a fair bit
Chantecler
EE - Pretty much the gentle giants of the flock
______ I really don't see much difference between the girls in the above group

Australorp - These girls are pretty docile as well but Zorra is as big or bigger than the EEs so I think the 2 below just kind of recognize that size DOES matter. And Echo doesn't seem particularly aggressive, but she'll push in to get the treats.

I know hatcheries have some but what would I really be getting.

Mixed bag I guess. My Salmon Faverolles are not the pretty white and light brown of the breeder birds you see here. They have a lot of black and dark brown, sort of smutty looking. But they are laying eggs and that is why I got the chickens.

Dick, they came from Lund Poultry. The pullet to the left in the first picture is particularly nice. First bird I've had that has tempted me to start showing. The cockerel has enameled ear lobes. How difficult is that to breed out?
It takes a while. What color eggs do your hens lay and what color are their earlobes? Contact me in the spring, I should be able to send some eggs your way.

I was going to shorten her name to Annie but Drama just fit her better. I also have an EE named Bunny and a Cokckoo Maran Named Marsala. That was my husbands doing.

I tried to pick docile breeds for my flock. An EE, a Cockoo Maran, A Golden Comet, A BA, a Buff Orp an a SL Wyndotte who is at the top of the pecking order. I also will be getting 2 maybe 3 Barred Rocks at the end of the month with one being a rooster. I know no one can acurately predict how exceptance of new birds into a flock will go but with that said those with past experience with mixed flocks and this breed may be able to spot possible problems and help. Soooo opinions, anyone see problems with this mix and adding some favorelles? And how many should I add for a nicer transistion? I really dont want to add more than 5 or 6. I'm still pretty new to chickens so sorry if I am being a pest.

Next question Where can I find them? I know hatcheries have some but what would I really be getting. Sandhill has some and mahogany(sp?) ones too whick I have never seen but I really don't want to order 25 straight run chicks. lol. I babbling sorry. shutting up now.

Cool names! I'm always tempted to name mine, but I usually refrain

With my luck something would happen to the one I get attached to..."Marsala" sounds very suave!

The only breeds you have that I can say anything about are the Buff Orp and the Marans. I didn't have any trouble with mine - actually, the only breed I did have trouble with was the Ameracaunas. But, they never drew blood or anything like that - just quick to let others know who they were

I've seen a few Sandhill birds, but I didn't know enough at the time to be any kind of judge regarding breed standards. The lady who owns them wants to get chicks from me if my flock ever gets to that point (I've had on going trouble with roosters becoming human aggressive, I won't breed that).

Where to get some non-hatchery SF? Right here
big_smile.png
- that is, on the buy and sell forum. Or, if there is an upcoming show in your area, that's a good place to look.

And, uh, we're all about babbling here

That's how I learned!

I have heard that Sandhill has Mahogany birds, but the color needs work...

I need help - I would like to learn a little about poultry genetics. Is there a book for beginners that anybody could recommend?

Bruce, I'll PM you about "The Andromeda Strain"

What color eggs do your hens lay and what color are their earlobes?

Dick, the pullets aren't laying yet. They were hatched towards the last of June. As to the earlobes, I'm not certain as lighting wasn't good, and earlobes are still light due to not being close to laying. Regardless, It looked like one of the pullets may have had enameled earlobes. I'll take a better look first chance.
Thank you for the generous offer to help me this coming spring. I should know more by then too.
