Faverolles Thread

I cannot tell their sex until they start to get feathers on their shoulders, back, ect...

Think you have some time to wait still.

Welcome.

Hi All,
I am new to this thread. I have LF Salmon Faverolles. I have has them for a year now and really love them! I cannot seem to sex them until they are 3 weeks old. Most say they can sex them at three days old. The little fuzzy butt is now 3 days old, any guesses as to its gender? Thanks for reading

Welcome to the thread!

I'm gonna say you have a little pullet

...... I could be wrong (it's happened before!) - but I'd bet money it's a girl....

Alright, snow, rain, sickness, spring cleaning and syrup all keeping me busy up here BUT I had time to look at my pullet from U of A and this causes me to ask a question: ticking in the beard is not sop and it is ... easy to breed out? Difficult?

she will potentially make good dark roos, the ticking is needed in some of the girls to keep the color good on the boys, breed it out entirely and you could begin to get incorrect color on the boys

I will try to explain to the best of my understanding. If you want to breed Salmons for show you need to have a pen for good color on the hens and a pen for nice colored males.

If I remember correctly if you use a male with white lacing in their black you can produce good females. Like this...

Please anyone do correct me if I am wrong. Still learning.

I will try to find some good examples... I have a few pictures of pullets which produce good cockerels and some that are good for pullet production... boys I will find online as most of mine are dark right now

This is a good hen for pullet production, note the lack of dark feathering in the tail. She also is creamy white from chin to vent- basically a good pullet producer is correct according to the SOP here you can see her from the front

with the possible exception of the girl on the far left, these are cockerel producers

next several pictures will be taken from the internet for informative purposes only, and we will strictly be looking at color, all will be pullet breeder type roos:
this guy is also most likely an older dude, but he is the washed out type that make pretty pale salmon girls, note the wing bow and wing color

this fella would probably be good if your lacing needed work... the lacing on the front of him is a bit odd though

Here we can look at type for pullet production a bit... and if anyone recognizes this next guy, send me a PM I want eggs

, (actually I think it may have been one of Peter's) all kidding aside, here is what I would consider a good choice for a pullet roo- he has great type which will translate well to his daughters and his color is about what you need if you already are producing girls that are correct

this next guy would be alright in the color department, but I personally would not use him for a pullet producer because of his type, he would probably make the hens he produced have too low of a tail and not enough mass in the body if he bred true to type, He could possibly be used for one season over very dark hens with good body mass and higher tail sets, but that would be for cockerel production, not pullet

all of these photos are mine, and I would consider all of these boys to be good roos for rich male pigment. Some are quite young but you can still tell they have the saturated color you want in your roosters

...now if my Fav girls would decide to give up their egg strike, and my Orp and Cochin ladies would grow up and start to lay, things finally will finally be starting to look good around here!

Sounds like a very nice Spring season starting up over there in the North East!

Good questions! Thanks so much for all the info.... very helpful indeed. Now I know how to pair mine up for the best results
