Faverolles Thread

I want to admit here that I plan to take a cockerel I got from Kees to the Windsor show. I know this is 'bad form' in showing but I am not doing for the reasons most do. When I went to the show last year there were no LF Favs. No where on the grounds. Zip. I want to take a few of my birds that are 'different' (I hesitate to say rare now) like the Favs and the Russian Orloffs to the shows so kids and the community have a chance to see them and I get some feedback on them for future breeding. I know this is a limbo spot, because they are someone else's work and I would say that to folks ... but I am show a bird that (kees in this case) might not, so I don't want to sully her name. What are the thoughts here, and please be polite, because I really want this to be educational for me as well as those who attend the show.
It's fine with me if you show him. Are you going to enter any of the pullets? Is the show still Memorial Day weekend? I should be able to stop by at some point.

I think it is. The typical Windsor May show. I don't have any ideas how to get ready but I am glad you don't mind if I show him. I might not because of the hassle but I want to. I would like to show a gal but IDK which. It all depends on what I have to do to show a bird, costs etc. I also need to get pics of the UofA birds. She is so dark.

Well, as you saw from my last post, I thanked Dick for my win at Delmarva. I didn't breed any of my birds - I don't have the facilities or the males to create a hatching program of my own. My choices, therefore, are to buy birds already hatched by someone else, or buy the eggs from someone else's breeding program. Until I finish my degree, get a job, and then some land, this is how it will have to be. When I show, I always tell people who the birds are from. I have learned a tremendous amount about breeding and showing this way, and you're still representing the breed. (In fact, I feel a bit odd when I win big, because IMO, it's really the breeder's success, not mine. All I did was feed and water the animal. But when I say that, all the breeders tell me that's half the work, it's still my bird, I'm the one who cares for it, etc., etc.) So, I just make sure I always mention who the breeder of the bird is. I'm just the caretaker and promoter of the breed, until I can start my own bigger flock.

BTW, get used to not seeing LF favs - I travel to several shows and am still surprised if they DO show up! Mine were the only two this past weekend. I don't even remember seeing any bantams. That's why the Crossroads and the Ohio National were so much fun - LF everywhere!

Hello fellow Faverolle lovers!
I need your opinion, see, I'm getting some new Faverolles and I have the option of Large fowl or Bantam. I'm thinking Bantam because I'm getting them mostly for showing and breeding. But I would love to have your opinion before I do anything drastic!
Thanks,

I love my LF Favs!...Just sayin'

Saturday I noticed one of my pullets behaving broodily.... She's a French Marans x Ameracauna cross, Sunday her sister decided to join her in the nest box....Then things got interesting!

It was hilarious watching the girls pile in that one box! Once, there were 4 of them crammed in there....LOL. Every time I would look in the coop, there would be at least 2 or 3 camped around the outside of the box, waiting for a chance to squeeze in. Funny!

So, today I notice one of the Fav girls just camping out in the middle of the barn floor (strange, I thought). Later I saw her camped out next to the crowded nest box (really? I thought). Tonight when I closed them up, I was planning to move the nest box, along with the girls into separate quarters so the others won't keep laying in that box. - Well, there she was, all up in that box with the other 2

If I only had a camera!

I just hope some of the eggs hatch....the boys have been separated from them for a while. I tried setting up 2 pens, but the one boy wasn't ready yet, that had to be 2 weeks ago. So, yesterday I let him out for a bit to smooze with the girls (he has the best feet!) - today I gathered up all the eggs and crammed them under those girls.

Hi everyone! I am trying to find some favarolles to add to my flock. I am looking for chicks or young juveniles. I am in PA. I have not been able to find any. I don't have an incubator but might have to get one just to get some of these cute little guys...
