Faverolles Thread

I have 2 pairs of 3-week old Salmon Faverolle chicks available.  Hen was shown & took first place at Modesto show.  Also have one very pretty extra rooster.  Please PM for information.

I read Modesto so I am assuming you are in California? I wish we were closer I am in NC but I would have scooped those babies up if I could have come to pick em up lol.

Hi, I have a 10 month old cockerel Named Chaps, he started getting aggressive at about 7 months old and would charge me and try to spur me (which are clipped short) I have tried carrying him around, forced holding and petting until he stops fighting it, and held him by feet in a corner technique, but with my work schedule I can't hold him every day, he is a little better with me but while out of town he attacked and bit my father and has bit my friend. He is also ripping feathers out of the girls backs wings and necks, I have tried the saddles but they are getting ripped off as well. I have 11 pullets for him but he still is so aggressive with them when it comes to breeding, he pushed one girl down in a puddle and I shooed him away from her just as her head was going under water. I don't know if kenneling him for a while will help or if he just needs to go. I thought my other rooster was aggressive but since I re-homed him, Chaps has transformed into a different bird and makes the other one seem like a gentleman. his crowing is also become excessive at times.
Is this something he will grow out of?
Any help will be appreciated :)

I would put him in the freezer. At this age I highly doubt he will grow out of the aggressiveness. It sounds like the other male you rehomed kept him in check, but now that he has free reign his true nature is showing. Your hens sound miserable, you shouldn't have to watch your back and Faverolles should not have this temperment.

Am sorry to say i agree with Keesmom…This kind of aggression is not normal for Faverolles and will only hurt You when You are not paying attention….There is also some debate if this would be hereditary….I did have a group once that was prone to this and chose not to keep them. Not sure what has entered the breeding pool to escalate this. ( thinking bad coloration as well)….or if the gene pool is still so small that all the close breeding has begun to change their behavior….
Sometimes when young enough, placing an aggressive, unruly cockerel with some very seasoned hens will put him in his place and teach him manners,,,,…I no longer advise placing one in a male group unless he just came out of one….They will often beat up physically and mentally till they give up life and most will die after that even if You try to save them…..Am sorry…..

This is good advice. If you can't find a well mannered cockerel this year, then maybe next year try putting a young cockerel in with your hens. He will have to work to earn his place.

Anybody in the Dallas area interested in a male SF hatched on may 9th. I ordered the eggs from farmergeorge1 on ebay.

I have questions for all your faverolles experts. After a lot of research I decided to order 2 salmon faverolles boys when I ordered my new girls (not faverolles).. I had a problem with an overly aggressive rooster and am hoping my odds will be pretty good of getting a people friendly rooster with the faverolles. They are 15 weeks old now. My first concern is that they are smaller than the pullets. Is this normal? Second, they haven't feathered out like the pullets. They have no tail feathers at all. My friend who baby sat the chicks until recently says the one had pasty butt really bad and it was hard to keep him clean so she ended up removing all his baby fluff when she cleaned him. The last thing, so far those salmon faverolles appear to be a bit slow as in a bit dumb. They are the last of the batch to do anything new. Is that normal for these calm birds in a mixed flock?

I fell in love with these birds when I saw pictures of them on the internet. So far I am disappointed as they are the ugliest birds I have. I'm hoping with time that will change. Oh yes, I got the birds from Murray McMurray Hatchery if that makes a difference. There are no local hatcheries where I live in the summer.

My cockerels take forever to feather out. They also spend a long time in the ugly stage and are a mess color wise until they molt into adult plumage. You may have to wait 6+ months to get an idea of what they will look like. I don't have any idea what McMurray's Faverolles look like so I can't tell you any more about yours.

They are a laid back breed so i would guess what you are seeing is normal. What other breeds did you get?

I got Rhode Island Red, Pearl Leghorn, Buff Orpington, Jersey Giant, Easter Egger, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Barred Rock, and what appears to be a New Hampshire Red which was substituted for the Speckled Sussex I ordered. A friend and I are sharing the pullets so some breeds are ones she wanted to try and some were for me.

So relieved to know the slow feathering is normal for the faverolles. Thank you for your reply. Guess I just have to be more patient with those boys.
