Faverolles Thread

I got my eggs from a BYCer here in California. Since this was my first time hatching shipped eggs I wanted to buy as local as possible. Apparently the are mostly from Belt Hatchery lines, but good for hatchery birds. Also there is some confusion about the size of the parent stock being bantam or standard. These should be standard. Anyway, I am trying mostly new breeds this year. Once I choose the breeds I want to continue with I will think about springing for higher quality...especially now that I've hatched shipped eggs.

My cousin is in france finishing a language program. I asked her to see if she could find a traditional recipe for petit poussin. The ALBC says favorelles are the traditional bird used for preparing it. I don't know that I'll end up needing to use the recipe, but it will be interesting to see what she finds out...nothing off of the French google though.

Thanks for the response. I was confused because all the little chicks seem to be developing dark feathers already! I'll wait awhile

and watch the higher wing feathers and combs. We are having fun with them in the meantime.

I do agree about the hen in the back having a very long back its kinda strange looking on second though. They are good for hatchery quality but they also don't have any lacing which is to bad but I haven't seen many LF with good lacing.

That is true the standard calls for more even feather color and clearer lacing they are better then some hatchery hens I have seen some even are completely dark brown or black.

the wing on that first bird is nice and straight- not dipping down at all... I believe Dick mentioned that a straight wing is desirable, and often lacking... and isn't that bird in the back stretching toward something. Of course I could be wrong on both counts

There combs are also a bit strange. I may be seeing things but does the bird in the front have any points on her comb it almost looks like a rose comb? They may be capable of producing some nice offspring when mated with your males who knows!

I think there are 3 points on her comb? It's not easy to see in that pic.

They are much better than many hatchery birds I have seen. They both have a clean breast, and except for maybe a little ticking in the beard of the girl in back (or is it dirt?) the beards are decent. Some of the hatchery pullets I've seen in the past year have a ton of black ticking all over, and are in general just awful.

finally back from chores & stuff.... I promise to get more pics this weekend. They're not much for posing and I have a bit to learn about bird photography.
Thanks for all the input!

1) They're from http://www.mccallumsflock.com/bantamfaverolles.htm via eggbid. 2 broodies hatched 6 of 15 eggs. One hatched 4 of her 7, competing broodies interfered mid way with the other, so I think the eggs got knocked around &/or chilled so she only hatched 2 of 8.
Of the six that hatched, one was sold, one died at 8-ish days old (stopped growing at about 4 days, ran around happy & small, & woke up dead one day), and the one boy flew right into the dog's mouth.

Flighty little guy!
2) they're actually the same body structure, but the perspective and her stretching to look at me (or whatever she was doing) makes her look longer.
3) they both have grey in beard & tail. Oh and one of their hatchmates has black ticking all over. Not sure if or how much they're related.
4) combs are the same, but I'm going out to look again anyway. I hope it was just the light/position.
5) they're being replaced by pullets (when they're big enough) from eggs coming next month from Dick. (

6) Sandi where are you? Give me 6 months & she's yours.
