Absolutely, I'm hoping the rain will clear up in a bit so I can get some pics today... and I promise to share!
... I'm late (again) on my weekly chick pics. I have had a real bad case of the hatching bug this year! Hatching out pretty much everything I get my hands on... oh my. I have been taking weekly pics of the chicks so we can watch them grow... it started as a 4H project for my son and I to do together... but, I have to admit I am really loving it. It is pretty neat to look back and see how much they change - even just over the course of a week. At first I thought I'd be able to tell them apart since I spend so much time with them... but I had to order little foot tags - some weeks they really change a great deal. If I'm able to hatch some of these fav eggs... I will take weekly pics of them as well... fingers and toes crossed!

I can tell all my adult birds apart but not the young ones. I am crossing my fingers for blue and black hens. I need more black hens for the lavender hatches next year as it stands now I only have one black hen from Leisha I would ideally like at least 3. Luckly the dominant roo is my black boy so I should get a good # of blacks.

I picked up some wee little rubber leg bands on ebay to put on the day old chicks legs so I can tell them apart... they have helped a bunch... and the chicks don't seem to mind them one bit.
I can't wait to see your lavenders... such a pretty color... I bet they will be awesome!
Soooo, while we are on the color topic... my hubby and I were chatting this morning and he asked me why wouldn't I just breed my Splash and Black hens to my White Faverolles Roo "Mr.Hen". I told him I didn't think it would work because I think of white as a really tricky (if not, downright sneaky) color... but, honestly, I'm not sure if it would or wouldn't work.
My white rooster is from a flock of Salmon/Salmon Blue stock (Melissa / pasofinofarm) and he has produced both Salmon/Salmon Blue and White chicks with Salmon/Salmon Blue hens (from the same stock).
From what I've gathered, dominant white would make more whites... and a recessive white, well, might just make blues and blacks. Goodness, my head is spinning a bit just trying to make some sense of all of this... but I really do want to try to have a better understanding of all of this. I would love to hear from some experienced breeders regarding this. I wish there was a chicken colors for dummies book

I will also usually use those I have a few of those and I use them when I need to seperate the bloodlines during hatching or something all of my adults and young birds have individual leg bands with # and I keep a book with details about them. Ha ha that's my attempt at record keeping.

Sorry they are not the best pics... but, I didn't want to stress them so just a couple of candid shots... no posing today

They are both missing lot's of feathers on their backs and some on the tops of their heads from breeding... poor girls... I may outfit them with some hen saddles. Both have beautiful full beards and muffs and are super fluffy, well except for their backs and heads. They both have reddish-brown colored eyes... five toes... five point combs... and light foot feathering. I think they are beautiful girls... even with the missing fluff.

They look very very nice to me that first hen I can't tell if she is light blue or splash its a nice color though. Hopefully the eggs hatch for you! They look really big which is nice.

I was thinking the same thing about her... she does have some darker splotches which I didn't capture in the photo... but she is mostly the light blue color... splashes I've seen in the past were lighter and more splotchier (I'm not sure that is a real word).
Yes, they are pretty big girls... I think they are about the same size as my girls from Pasofino.
No eggs yet today... but after our photoshoot I did see splash hop up into the nest box... fingers crossed that all those missing feathers were not for nothing

Oooh, yeah, especially if she's splotchy, I vote splash!

I think splash too... but I'm not sure... I make a sport out of second guessing myself though. Hey, maybe when she grows all those feathers back it'll be easier to tell

Looking at the blues and the splashes I have I think she is splash the splashes I have out there vary from solid powder blue to very splotchy. The blues all have darker blue with very dark lacing. I could be wrong though.
