i was thinking about getting one of those traps. but i'm afraid that my FIL usually catches squirrels in his when he's trying to catch larger animals. i know coyotes are open season in our area, i wonder if raccoons are considered 'open' year round too! my dh got his dad's bow restrung and tuned recently so i am hoping to target practice soon. having this happen will make me learn how to use it sooner!

i'm getting a really neat cross. a young pullet that is a faverolles crossed with a marans. it got the cuckoo coloring but it has the 5 toes, feathered down to it's outer toes and it looks to have the beard and muff growing in too! here's hoping it has the laid back personality of the fav and not the maran! now i just wish i had the LF favs to work with here!

I've got two 8 week old Fav/Wheaten Marans pullets. I liked them so much that I put another couple of eggs under my broody that is sitting now. They both have feathered legs, 5 toed feet and the beginnings of beards/muffs and are some of the friendliest chicks I have.

I do use a live trap to catch raccoons. The county reservoir property is about 6 miles from us so we just take them there and drop them off. I going to set the trap out again tonight and see if I can get another one.​

I hate raccoons. We caught one in a live trap a while back. Since then Dutch will bark during the night if he smells one outside. He can't see or hear very well anymore but he can smell just fine.

I'm so very sorry about your loss Chickie'sMoma. I have not had any problems with coons, but I have hawks and possums. The possums are easy enough to take care of, but the only thing I can do about the hawks is to cover my runs. I do let some of my chickens free-range, and so far they have been ok, but I worry. Anyways, I finally got pics of my two new babies. One of them had been shrink-wrapped in it's shell and needed help, so he/she is not quite as fluffy.

If you drop the raccoons off some where they will come back. For years I wasn't having any problems with raccoons, I was talking to my wife about it.....and then the light went on. A radio. I had one in the coop for years and it finally died. I never replaced it. Now I'm having problems. An old farmer told me about this. Put a radio in your coop, it doesn't have to be loud but put a talk show on, not music. It worked for me for years. I just found an old one in my basement. It's going in today. My wife had found them at a flea market or tag sale. It cost her 2 bucks for two radios. One that was in the coop that died and the one I'm going to put in today. I told her if you go to any more flea markets keep your eyes open. I always need backups.

Hello BYCers! I am new to chickens and purchased some Salmon Favs from Cackle hatchery (I bought them before learning that I needed to buy from breeders) Anyways since I am new I don't know exactly how or what they are supposed to look like, ideal toe spacing, color, type ect... If anybody could help me out I am posting pictures of 2 pullets born 4/5/10 give me the list of what is wrong with them and what a SF is supposed to look like lol. Pics of correct birds would be nice too. No need to be kind I really want to learn what they are supposed to look like! Thank you

(Also if I need diff pics let me know)
