Faverolles Thread

It gets really hot in Baltimore and also extremly humid. It would have been impposible to keep everyone alive if I had more birds. I had a fan running in the coop all day and night. I also put frozen bottles in the coop and in the shaded are underneath the coop. I also changed the water with ice water twice a day. Luckly everyone mad it and now we have some cool weather and rain coming through.

Peter these pullets are next years blue breeders for me I am really excited to see what they produce.

Are you talking about Henry's splashes? He got those from me.

Leisha, thank you so much. I'm very complimented to be included. Perhaps I shall work on something for the next one? Yes, I was talking about those pullets. Congrats on breeding those beautiful girls. You are very welcome for the pics. Nice toes on that dorking huh. Any subject matter in specific you would like to read?
I've been a bit quiet about this but I can now state that I have one silver cast btm white chick and a regular wht chick. Hopefully more will be on the way next weekend and the next and the next. Thank you Dick for shipping me eggs. In the next clutch I should have some lavender splits, more btm whites, splash, blue and of course my salmons.
I have my cock bird in the house in the air conditioning as he has succumb to the heat, or at least that's what I'm thinking. As I only have a total of 10 chicks by him this is not great news for me. But at least I already have an acceptable son that will be ready to start breeding in a few months. I'm not used to my birds dying so young - 3 1/2. I haven't lost a bird to heat in years. I'm not quite sure why he has done this as he's been ok as the others have been and where I moved to in '06 is cooler than where I did live. Funky. Does Emmett need a retirement home yet? lol Since I breed during the summer I have to watch the red lamps very carefully. I've been turning them off about 2:30 in the afternoon and then turning them back on after 9. Even on the hatchlings.
I've been reading the hours people are driving to pick up birds. I think it's absolutely great that you guys live so close. I had to travel 11 hrs one way to get my first really good ones. On showing as examples of what it's like to beat up I-75, I-95 or I-10 to get out of Florida. 16 hrs Houston Livestock show, 16 hours Indiana State Fair, 17 Lucasville fall and spring for many years, 17 hrs Bill Wulff's show, and the grandest trip that burnt me out all together. MN - 32 whopping hours in the car one way. I started flying at one point when we could still fly birds with. Is it any small wonder that the thought of being in the car for that long would require better living through chemistry for me? giggle
Thanks for the additional input on dealing with the heat. I think it's a subject we could all read more on.

Please write something for the next one! Hope your male makes it glad to hear you have a son to use. The trip was really fun I can't wait to drive to the crossroads show. It gives me a chance to see other parts of the country.

I will be happy when summer goes away. What a difference a year makes. This time last summer I considered starting the wood stove to take the damp, chilly feeling out of the house (53 on July 15). This year I lose 3 birds in a week. None of them were favs. Only one was a surprise. An otherwise healthy splash silkie pullet. I may keep some Gatorade on hand in case of another crazy heat wave.

The black hens I got from Dick are still laying regularly even with the heat and are holding up well. Leisha's bantam blue pair is in the wonderfully cool brooder in the lower level (still 65 there). I didn't want anything to happen to them during the extreme temps this past week so that's where they went. They're next to the chicks I hatched out from Dick's eggs and can keep them company.

ok, i finally got pics of the cuckoo marans/faverolles cross i'm thinking of working with. i've named her Collette and she has been a sweet little cuddly ball of feathers. right now she's been trying to cozy up to my neck while on my shoulder. she likes the dog and i've noticed she likes to follow him around the room every now and then. (Ein doesn't usually make chicken friends so easily

) currently she's about 10 weeks old but she has nice coloring coming in and very good 5th toe placements! her beard looks like it may need some work but she is still young and that may get a little longer.

You are welcome. Sorry to hear about the roo. Thank goodness I have not lost any to heat. Where I live, i can gnerally have a 4 hour drive and be in 6 different states for a show. We will have about a 5 1/2 hour drive for the Fav National. I can't believe it is the middle of July and the National is fast approaching. Can't wait to see everybody again. I hate this time of year, no shows.

Dick

The incubator is peeping. Dick these are the eggs you sent me. 15 were fertile, now we will just wait and see how the hatch. Last hatch until the fall.

2 more days of work. My procedure is being done next week and then 2 months of rest, relaxation, no stress (LOL) and spending plent of time with the birds. They will probably hate me after these 2 months, but it will be relaxing. Oh yeah also working on getting everything ready for the National (YEAH)!!!!!!!!!!!!! Henry, don't forget to send me the stuff you want to put in the newsletter.

Chickie'sMoma - wow, she does have really nice toes! Very cute too. I love the Faverolles crosses that I have - they are 8 weeks old in these pics (except for the EEs). These were from a test hatch to see if Emmet was doing a good job. Now I just need my Fav girls to grow up.

These two are Gold Laced Cochin/Fav crosses:
