Hey faverolles lovers!

I have a quick question about broody tendencies in this breed. In my mixed flock, I have two salmon favs, hatchery quality. It seems that my Weezah has gone broody. She has been in the nest box constantly for about a week. She had been coming out to eat and drink, and roosting at night. As of yesterday, she starred sleeping in the nest box too, and I'm having to force her out to eat and drink. She's starting to loose weight, so I'm afraid I'm gonna have to break her of it.

At first I thought she was trying to escape the other girls because she is at the bottom of the pecking order, but when I come near the nest box she puffs up and squeals at me, so I'm thinking she's broody.

It just seems a little early to me. She's only 6 months old. Is that normal? I tried to tell her that I will buy her some fertile eggs next spring, but she's not having it.

I guess I'll have to try the dog crate method of breaking her before the poor girl starves herself. I just hate to stress her out even more.

Is it normal for them to go broody so young?

Thanks! Andrea

I have never had a pullet that young go broody. But its certainly a possibility I would put her in a wire bottom cage or put her in a separated place with no place to nest.

Good Luck,
Henry

Thanks for the reply Henry!
I'm hoping that she is broody & not just becoming neurotic because the other girls pick on her, or worse yet, sick!

The weight loss really worries me. I'm going to start with a cage tonight.
Poor sweet girl!

A friend of mine has some 6 month old barred rock bantams that have already went broody. Several of them actually. It isn't normal per se but it happens quite a bit.

I'm a little concerned that she had been roosting at night....if she were indeed going broody, she should've stayed in the nest box at night too...see if she keeps eating and drinking good if you put food and water in her nestbox...

Hey y'all we are at the county fair and judging is complete. Its not huge but fun. Out of about 40ish bantams my hen I got from Leisha got Reserve Grand Bantam and my cockerell got Best Bantam Cockerell and roo got Best Bantam Roo. And of course all the rest placed as 1st and 2nds excepts the little 4mnth pullet got 3rd but she's young. Another cool thing is that out of all 70ish birds my standard buff orp hen got Grand Champion of Show!! Woohoo!!
