Faverolles Thread

I have a question about wry neck. I've had a couple of silkies with it before, and that wasn't much of a surprise as they're prone to it.

I had one of Dick's cockerels have a case of wry neck when the group was about 5 weeks old. He eventually recovered. I now have a 7month old cockerel with it again. I suspect it's the same one but can't be 100% sure. This is where Dick's wing bands would help!

Anyway, is susceptability to wry neck genetic? Should he be tossed out of the potential gene pool for next season? I do have 2 other cockerels from Dick, plus the roo from Ron Patterson and young boys out of that roo.

Here are some updated pics even thought today wasn't the best day for them. Cloudy, foggy, and mucky!

One of my black hens has started laying again so I'm trying to decide which boy to pair her with, or is the coloring more important than type. I have 2 with similar coloring but differing body types. Here they are.

This guy has a Sussex build. Kind of like a tank.

This one is more slender and has a different tail set.

They're both in this pic but not sure if you can really see the difference.

Here's the F1 pullet I haven't been able to get a pic of before today.

Here are two of Dick's boys. They really don't look this bad, it's the mucky weather.

Top dog.

Here are a couple of young pullets out of Ron Patterson's trio. They're about 3 months old now. Chickie'sMoma, these pullets are from the same parents as the eggs you have. Hope they hatch some girls!

A fidgety bantam black roo who refused to pose.

And the non-chicken residents who survived the holidays.

I've been checking in, but it's been such an insane crazy month I usually fall asleep not long after I can finally sit down for more than 30 seconds.

I really want to make it to Springfield. I'll have to see how the next week or so goes. Jonathan's birthday is the 9th and my sister's is the 16th. My grandfather's was also the 15th, so lots of Jan birthdays here!

I was wondering how hard it would be to tell a Buff Orp Faverolle mix from a pure Faverolle chick. I have a friend that wanted some chicks and I was just going to give her the chicks out of my BO and Brahmas. I am doing a test hatch in the incubator my husband suprised me with for Christmas so I just grabbed eggs. The Brahma mixes should be easy to tell I hope. Its the BO mix that I am worried I will have trouble telling. This will be my first hatch so I am just as nervous about doing it right.

Keesmom, those eggs should be hatching any day now if moma has been doing her job right. but i haven't tried to candle the eggs yet since it had been cold when she was in the coop. she's now in the house with the remaining eggs that didn't get crushed by the other hens.

there aren't many left from what you gave me.

I.ve never seen that in my birds before but I would not breed from that bird.Wry neck is a hereditary defect. So is wry tail. What I have found is that these two traits are caused by recessive genes meaning they show up only when two birds are mated they carry the same gene.
Wry or twisted neck, resulting from curvature of the spine or "scoliosis" occurs as birds grow, and is particularly common among brown leghorns. It usually happens to a group of related birds and does not affect their ability to drink.
Wry or twisted tail is a condition in which the tail feathers lean or twist to one side due to weakness in the vertebrae that hold the tail. Wry tail usually shows up as the tail feathers grow and become heavy.
Do not use birds with either of these defects as breeders and cull breeders you can identify as carrying these recessive genes.
This information I found in Gail Damerow's book "The Chicken Health Handbook"

I hope you can make it. I plan on being there in the morning. I need to leave by noon because of my grand-daughters birthday. I might take that lavender male I have to see if I can sell him. I have no need for him anymore.

A buff orp male on a salmon hen could give you white cockerels or white cockerels with colored tails. I'm not sure about chicks, maybe you could tell by the toes.
