Faverolles Thread

Of the 10 set 7 hatched, all are doing well. Still getting their land legs under them. So far this is their best look

Hi guys!

Just checking in on my fellow Faverolles lovers. We have been doing lots of hatching for the local folk this spring... it seems that more and more people are wanting Favs as utility birds for farms and homesteads. I recently did a cheese making class here and 5 people took home chicks to use for egg laying and meat. I am really appreciating my Favs more than ever as we are in a terrible drought and yet they are thriving on pasture and a little supplemental feeding. I know that we often talk about what pretty birds they are (and for good reason) but I just wanted to mention that they really do so much more for us farmers who are providing eggs and meat to our families and to others in our communities. What awesome birds!

Kassandra, I went bac to the link and looked those birds over. Anyone else notice the "owner marks" on the pics other than me? PFM??? Possible...no, I'm just curious

Oh dear, I've been discovered.

Actually it was the same eggs I put on here at the same time. Truth. Not one single inquiry. So, I'll fess up. I sent all three dozen to a friend that got the atypical response (my opinion) on shipped eggs. 1 chick! 1 chick. I'm being sweeter than usual here. There's a question why I will not ship eggs? All those same pics are on here too.-) lol I also decided that I will not be offering anything locally again. Big disappoint overall.....

I'm still hatching. The oldest of my salmons consist of the very last of the Simmie kids, Britgirl chicks and ArthurXAdore Me and My Girl. I also have the first Clairissa eggs coming off in the next couple. She and her sister Sabrina PubertXBritgirl are with Rupert, their uncle. These chicks complete the 3 generation push I have been able to do since last April 1. In salmon males I only have Rupert and Arthur. Lance didn't pan and Pubert got horribly mean. Where in the world that came from I don't know. I have a trio from him bred to Britgirl. They are pleasing. In fact I feel Clairissa is going to be one of the best from the breedings of the past year. She's the most correct anyway. Now if I could put the beard of Cannabis/Adore Me on her that'd be the kicker to perfection.

The lavs/self blues are growing into some pretty birds. They look more delicate with their beards and faces than other lav/self blue chickens I have seen. I can't wait to breed two of the males to my group of females.... Rupert and Arthur will be utilized on the pullets. I will then be retaining some of the lavs to breed directly to the splits I'll create from the crosses on my salmons. Yr away? Maybe less. My blues and blacks are the oldest I have. I absolutely adore their dispos. They are more docile than the salmons.

Hope all are having fun.

Peter

Great fun Peter! Tell me more about the packing method you are using on shipped eggs... we've seen some pretty good results... just had a batch of eggs go to the wrong address in California and then be returned here... I went ahead and set them... 12 of 15 hatched yesterday! I am amazed... truly amazed every time I think that someone can send an egg from across the country and I can apply a little heat and humidity and 21 days later something as delicate and precious as a chick pops out! WOW!

I think I'll be in Orlando April 2012, and possibly June 2012. Hopefully I can bring home a few (dozen) ....Texas too maybe in June 2012 a layover in Austin?

And finally... the long awaited pics of the buffs I got from Leisha. Not quite the pictures I wanted... I need some help from DS to get those... these are from my phone in iffy weather, but they show their nice type:

Clancy, head cockerel

#2 cockerel, nameless for now (not sure I should use him since he's more colorful)

The two styles... most are the butterscotch buff, a few are the creamier buff... which is preferred?

A better shot of the darker buff

The group shot.. with the dog holding their attention.
We love them all! Thanks again Leisha!
