Sending heartfelt prayers also. As we meet so many on our lists, its hard not to care and worry. We have so far been lucky in the Pacific N.W. with only minor this and that. Am so greatful, My Mother used to say, But there for the Grace of God go I. eliz

Hello, am glad that this table crops up once in awhile to help remember. Have asked a few times with various answers, but what is the opinion of how long one should wait before collecting hatching eggs again after switching roos???? Also have always wondered why self-blue/lavender and some of the other colors of a given breed can breed true, but not blue, as in blue, black, splash? Just Curious, eliz

Salmon/blue salmon does work like BBS.

salmon x salmon = 100% salmon
blue salmon x salmon = 50% salmon, 50% blue salmon
blue salmon x blue salmon = 25% salmon, 50% blue salmon, 25% splash salmon
splash salmon x salmon = 100% blue salmon
splash salmon x blue salmon = 50% blue salmon, 50% splash salmon
splash salmon x splash salmon = 100% splash salmon

So you haven't hatched any splash salmons? Salmon x salmon can only give you salmon, just like black x black will give black. However it isn't always easy to tell the salmon/blue salmon/splash salmon hens apart. If you do get some blue salmons out of your salmon only pen then you have a blue salmon hen in there somewhere, or a splash! Though splash salmon hens are usually a little easier to spot.

Have seen so many horrible images on the weather channel, and was hoping no one I "knew" had been affected. So relieved to hear you're safe. Have donated to the Red Cross, but somehow it feels like so little in the face of such devastation.

Kassandra - tried to PM you but your in box is full. Just wanted to let you know that I locked down 8 of the eggs you sent me, and already have internal pips!

I'll keep you posted on the hatch!

How old is that baby? I have 3 chicks hatched 2 weeks ago tomorrow. I'm pretty certain I have one roo and two pullets but this is my first hatch. I'm inexperienced with the babies who BTW are fat, fluffy, healthy and full of the dickens,, so am not 100% sure I'm accurate. Maybe I'll post a few pics and get some opinions. I just love these babies - and I got the eggs from a very special breeder!

Sadie it takes me till they are about 2 weeks old when their chest and back feathers start coming in. If I see light feathers on the chest its a girl. If I see dark feathers at the base of the wing and on the chest its a boy. I have also noticed the girls feather in faster.

My guess on the one pictured is male because of how dark it is.

Well, as far as lavender goes it's a gene that dilutes black (and red). You need 2 doses of the gene for lavender to show. So if you breed 2 lavender birds each will pass on one copy of the lav gene to the offspring so you will get lavenders.

Blue also is a diluter of black, but will show with just one dose of the gene. With one copy of blue you get blue birds, with 2 copies you get splash. So if you breed blue to blue some chicks will get no blue gene (black), 1 dose of blue (blue) or 2 doses (splash).

Hope that makes sense.

Send me pics and I might wager a guess, but I agree with Cindy, I like to wait until they are about 2 weeks old to be 100% sure of what's what.

I too would guess that the chick that Shelley posted is a boy.

More gender questions! Do you think these are all girls?

Also, does anyone have pictures of white sport chicks and blue Salmon cockerel chicks? Thanks so much!
