(- I need to read up on that....)
My girls are doing great, thank you so much Cindy

The day before they arrived (Wednesday) I went to the Post Office and gave them my contact info. They were very polite and thankful that I stopped by to let them know....The lady said they could come in early Thursday morning - I said "that's good! - call me anytime."

I hardly slept at all

The phone rang at 5am! 20 minutes later I was at the post office....

They are gorgeous! They were in good shape, took them a little while to eat and drink, but after they relaxed a little it was dinner time :)

Now I have 4 pullets and a roo.... the girls are a nice color variety from light to dark, all of them are nice sized (I think). So, we'll see what happens

Next: order an egg scale! Get incubator and set the largest ones

muahahaha!

I am so glad those girls made it to PA. What a debacle, good grief..... They were a "priority" shipment, bumped for a shipment with dry ice??? What the heck? - Unless it was human organs they were shipping, they had no right to bump *live* animals....poor things.
Mine came at 5am too....I was soooo excited i could hardly contain myself VBG,,,,,I tried to take pics but they just looked frumpy, scared and wondering what the heck happened. They were in good weight( heavy)...Someone did lay an egg yesterday so with the 5 Cindy sent i have 6 in the bator.

Am through with the Mahogany eggs for the year...so hope i will get a few more blacks eggs and maybe will add the largest, heaviest Salmons eggs too.....i did get one Salmon chick from my new group, most darling lil fuzzzzball everyone else runs around on hyperdrive, but this chick is like Winny the pooh Bear...

BTW, i had been using large livestock bowls this summer for water for the free rangers but have now placed a large rock in them. the chickens end up standing on the edge and when the water level gets lower it tips over on top of them....all summer they were fine but had 2 just this week caught under. Always check overturned pans.....

Hope all is well, and dry (monsoon season here now)....eliz

So glad to you have some blacks you are planning on working with. They are very rare and its good to see the population get spread out a bit so we have backup incase anything happens to anyones (knock on wood).

Raining a lot here to the last couple of days. The yard is a puddle. Hopefully it dries up before it gets cold enough for it to turn to snow.

Breeds of dogs, like English Bulldogs require artificial insemination and I think this is unnatural.

And a veterinarian to perform a C-section when the pups are born. They have been bred for broad shoulders and narrow hips. BAD combination. I can't think of a "better" example of man's screwing up what nature created.

Faverolles have been occasionally known to be easily intimidated by other non favs and end up not getting enough groceries to survive...this may have been the case of your Fav, rather than hatchery or not........or something wrong with her,,,,,,,,eliz

My birds are all hatchery - Ideal in Texas. The Favs are as pushy as the others whenit comes to treat time. Only the Cubalayas are not pushy. But they are 2/3 to 1/2 the size of the other birds. When you are small, it is best not to push your weight around with the "big girls". We know who will win. Of course, the Cubalayas can just fly off if they want to. The Astralorps and EEs don't get far off the ground. They aren't aggressive either so no problems. The Cubalays just have to work their way around the bunch tto find space to get treats.

I am continuing to learn but have noticed that with different breeds, like eventually hang out with like whether lots of chickens or a few regardless when they came or who with. I do think more feeding stations would be helpful, and ample room or several roosting options.

Maybe it is because:
- I only have 12 and they have plenty of room
- They all came together as day olds

But mine seem to be ethnically blind. They all hang out with"whoever". I've been working on their nesting box this weekend (which I hope they will soon need) and 7 of them showed up in the shop. Hard to tell in the picture but both the Astralorps are there as well as the Cubalayas, 1 EE, 1 Ancona and one Partridge Chantecler - no Favs. The other 5 were elsewhere. They also sleep all mixed up and it is not the same birds next to each other every night.

Here is a picture of them "helping" me. As you can see, I have MANY unfinished projects and those are just the ones in the workshop. The community nest box is in the upper right, the pointy board is the left side of the box as seen from the "egg collection" side. They came and went a few times. I had to throw them out when Andromeda (the orange EE) started pecking the foam board.

Why is it they love that stuff so much? I know I can not even use it in cracks in the coop. They will dig it out and eat it. I winder what in nature that looks or taste similar to it. Gloria Jean

These pretty ladies (well you can only see one in my picture...but there are two there) followed me home from the fair today.

Don't you just HATE when that happens? I mean, geez, it takes FOREVER to get home when you have to wait for the chickens to catch up every few hundred feet!

Pretty bird. My hatchery Favs are smutty. I just hope they are good layers since that is their purpose at my house.

I am so in love with my bantam faverolles, now i am wanting more- so who has a small number of eggs available? These are from dinamoe, and just adore them- sammy the cockerel is a slow maturer i guess, but he knows when to protect his girls, when one of the EE's and his little lady were having words, he quietly went over and stood between them- and i guess gave her a serious stink eye cuz she left...
