Faverolles Thread

Hey guys. Just wanted to post a couple pictures of my newest chicken setup. For about a week I have been fencing the faverolles in with plastic netting. Not sure safe for them in our urban area as they can't free range and people are always walking buy with dogs. So I decided today that I would spring on a bit of electric netting from craigslist. Only $150 for a new charger and 100' of fence. Figured it was a pretty good deal and that I will use it a lot in years to come. So here is what I came up with its pretty rigged up to separate the faverolles from the layers. Plus it doubles back a bit because the yard isn't quiet big enough for the whole 100'. We will see what my roommates say they may not be happy with it. But I am happy knowing the faverolles can be out and about with less of a chance of being attacked and killed.

Nice! I bet they are happy to be out and about. Might as well let them enjoy the grass before it disappears.

Yeah I have been letting each group free range a bit everyday. But I think they will be much happier until snow flies. Then we may go back to the covered run for the faverolles.

Quote: I love to let mine free range. But it has been raining so much and everything is so wet and mushy! My favs are sooo dirty! Their foot feathers are a mess! Going to be a long winter and spring! I even have a lot of dry area in the run, but they seem to want to dig in the wet stuff!

Snow will be coming real soon Henry. Wednesday/Thursday it seems.

Mary posted on FB that they were OK. She has to do into town somewhere to get their WiFi, she still is out of power at home, but has wood heat... :)
That's good to hear! A wood stove is a lifesaver in long outage situations. Hopefully she'll get power back before the next storm rolls in.

OK, here you go: Ideal Poultry Faverolle feet.
Of course Anais wasn't willing to stand still so we have some blur, but I'm posting those just so you can see both the front and back ends

As you can see, they aren't the beautiful clear Salmon color of the breeder's birds being posted here and her feet are not nearly as feathered.
20 1/2 weeks.

This one is almost surreal. Not a lot of light and the digital camera isn't the highest quality.

That is Zia (Anacona) next to her. She MIGHT be the supplier of egg #1, laid Friday.
But it isn't really white so maybe another girl was ready first and I'm not recognizing the signs.
Yeah, it is small, but is the FIRST!

Sounds like I better get the snow blower on the garden tractor.

Yep, toasty warm and no power needed. I have a 1932 propane kitchen stove too, also no power needed. Just have to store up water because the well water doesn't come up by itself.

Yeah, I know what you mean. We can handle no power, but the no water gets annoying after a while. We lost power for 5 days in last year's October snowstorm and were the only ones who didn't have to leave. Wood stove for heat, heavy duty coolers for food outside, rubbermaid tubs full of water.

Yeah I was driving up from Montpelier today and saw some snowflakes. The tops of even the shorter mountains were white as well. So I am sure in the next few days it will start. The cows are coming into the barnyard early this week at least. It felt like it was almost snowing when I went out to get them this afternoon. Ice cold rain.
