Wow they are so dark. Are these supposed to be Salmons?

When my bearded Orloffs and Ams came without beards it took quite a while for them to stop picking and then a molt grew in some HUGE beards/muffs. You know you can put blue food coloring (liquid kind is what I like) on them or zinc oxide (like the lifeguards use) and it might help as an easy experiment. If you aren't showing it might not matter I guess. Cross off your variables: plenty of protein and space; check and check. Nutrition good; check. No bugs; check. I guess if its really bothering you try separating them as best you can for a little while, like no contact, so that the feathers start to grow back in (getting that area wet a few times helps so think of it as a spa get away and just spritz her face with a water bottle) and see what happens after reintro. Its just a weird thing I would do. I love the beards so I want to see them.

I don't know where their black came from. But Cloverleaf has bantam blacks and some LF, Pam Maynard has LF blacks/blue(splash) and i just received a small group of LF but they are still getting settled and are not laying yet. I think Karen Carpenter in Burlington, Wa. had a bantam black at the Chehalis show today.

Hi Liz,
Nice meeting you in Chehalis Saturday. I enjoyed talking with you. Enjoy the holidays! ~ Carolyn

No offense taken or even considered!! I was just commenting I can rule out the possibility of over crowding. Makes it easier actually. Imagine if they were even marginally crowded, what to do?? Make more space for them (as if I have the time for that) and then if it didn't change, work on the diet, boredom or something else? I'm an engineer - the fewer variables in a problem, the better I like it.

Yeah, I'm laughing. I actually thought "maybe she doesn't like beards on girls". What would she think if she had a mirror to look in?

I didn't name my girls .... my daughter did! Well, only ten, she let a friend name one and the girl she watches once a week name one. It took me FOREVER to remember their names and I found out just yesterday that I was spelling one of them wrong. The Favs, being a French breed, were named after the two girls she stayed with in Toulouse while on trips with her Theatre on Ice troupe a few years back.

When my dad found out they were named, he said "Bruce, Bruce, Bruce, you don't name them. Makes it harder to put them in the pot when they stop laying". I said "Dad, it doesn't matter, these girls will be going on the dole when they retire. No animal my daughter knows personally will be eaten." She is a vegetarian and only barely tolerates that the rest of us are not.

Bruce
I am not sure if its respect I have for a vegetarian or confusion, but man I like chicken, steak, pork well you get my point and we named some of ours and still from time to time, it does make it harder to eat them but at the end of the day I told my kids

Yeah, I sure would be cranky if I couldn't have a good steak or pork chop once in a while! Funny thing - I'm not a big chicken eater, unless it's fried

I think I'm going to bring my supervisor a couple of the birds I put in freezer the last go around. I don't want them to stay in there too long.....

It is tempting to name a few of them, like the ones with very distinct personalities.... I have one pullet, I secretly call her "the Lone Ranger" and "Dora the Explorer" because she's just fearless and all over the place - by herself!

Those are for sure Salmon. Their color will change still. Congrats on your new boys.

Please share some pics as they grow.
Hi there
frow.gif
The pics don't do them justice

One is a little dark and the other is a little lighter - a great set for the girls I have! I was very fortunate to get them this time of year, a pleasant surprise....They are really liking the greenhouse! I knew it had to be better than the laundry room!

Yeah, I'll get some more pics as they morph into young roos that look more "salmon"

I don't think they look dark, they look like typical young boys. Look like a lot of the ones I've had here. I'm not at home so no recent pictures, but here is a before and after of one male this year.

At 12 weeks

And again at about 5 months

I'll get some better, closer pics this weekend. I was kinda in a hurry when I shot those.

They're both very nice.... I like to watch them sparring

It was kind of Cloverleaf to bring them all the way up for me!
Now, if they remain nice young men, they'll have a long, healthy life

Happy Thanksgiving to ya'll
