Is it sentimental? Based on appearance, personality? Egg color? Do your breed favorites change from year to year?

My favorite breed is a Buff Orp. They are fat and mom-ish, they remind me of an Italian mother who always wants you to eat more. They also have a laid-back temperment (in my experience). Lots of nice eggs too.

My favorite individual hen is Betty, a white Rock. She hatched out 4 chicks this past year and is such a good mom. All her chicks have grown up to be such smart chickens. She alerts everyone when danger is near and ensures that all her chicks, even full grown now, get their fare share of food when it is thrown down. I will cry like a baby if anything ever happened to Betty. My sons and I decided that she would deserve some kind of eulogy/funeral and not the standard burial (throw carcass way out in the woods).

How bout you?

Well I have two... My favorite of the common breeds is hands down the Rhode Island Reds.. I just LOVE those beautiful red ladies and the gorgeous roosters..
For the rare breeds.. Its the Sonnerat's.. aka Grey Jungle Fowl.. They are gorgeous, make some of the most awesome calls, and are so intersting to watch.

My fav individual bird is "Jimmy", the red pyle OEGB roo. He's little in stature, but mighty in spirit!

The fav rare breed is hard- I'm leaning towards the Chanteclers! They are so friendly & will be awesome come spring!

The other favs are the showgirls! What a riot to watch! Goofy birds, for sure. BUT- its so hard to pick one! We love our cochins too.

I love my barred rocks, all mine have such funny personalities. They're tough and nothings seems to faze them, even the snow. My favorite is Edwina, she's the smallest with the biggest additude.
Also, my Salmon Favorolles are just beautiful and sweet. Jen

For general all purpose birds, Salmon Faverolle, Black Beard, my SF rooster is the nicest chicken I own. He is a perfect gentleman with the girls and he never has shown even the slightest bit of aggression towards me. They are gentle, curious and fun loving. They don't snuggle much but are not flighty in the least. I was sort of shocked a few weeks ago when I failed to latch the gate to my Silkie pen and my Silkie Roo, who was Black Beards best buddy while they were growing out, encountered Black Beard. There was a big Cock Fight and my Black Beard was not the victor. He still struts his stuff and there has been lots of trash talk through the fence lately and I am glad he was not totally humiliated.

For the snuggle factor the Silkies are the winner hands down but I would still have to choose the Faverolles if I had to choose only one. Please God, don't make me choose just one.

My favorite is Light Brahma and I can't imagine another breed of chicken that has a more calm and friendly attitude. Even my roos are people friendly. My broody hens are wonderful moms and excellent teachers for the young chicks.

They lay extra-large brown eggs, even through winter and take the cold weather we have here very well. Most of the time they free range, however when they must stay in the penned area they get along well.

I was thinking about getting some Black Javas from the garfield farm ( rare strain with a white gene ), however I'am not prepared with another coop for them.

It seems like everyone loves their breed as much as I do mine!

My favourite is the Welsummer. This is purely based on one hen (I know, I know, one hen doesn't make a breed

) They lay lots of big brown eggs, they're friendly and they're pretty, and she never got ill. All I want in a chicken, and hopefully I will be getting another one soon

My favorite so far are the Americana banties, we have enjoyed their colored eggs so much. We even made a colored egg Easter wreath last year.
