Favorite Treats?

They are eating the figs they can reach off the fig tree. They stripped the pomegranate blooms off the bushes. They love the leaves of blue bonnets. They loved my geranium. My cabbages still haven't fully recovered from their feeding frenzy. They love visiting the strawberry barrels.

They have access to lettuce and won't touch it. I've never hand fed it to them like I did the cabbage.

My mom made a fruit salad and used a watermelon as the bowl. Well...I took it home before she could throw it out and the girls are in for a treat tomorrow. But they won't touch cracked corn or BOSS. But the boys are hoovers, they will eat anything.

I "grew" some cheap birdseed until it was about 4 inches tall, and my silkies LOVE it. Don't blame them, it made such a soft, lush grass I'd cover my lawn with it if I didn't know it would grow 4ft tall.

Just sprinkle the cheapest birdseed blend (white&red millet, sunflower seeds) over dirt, lay a piece of burlap over it so birds won't eat it before it grows, then water liberally for a few days until it sprouts, then just every so often until it reaches a few inches. Took about a week - I forgot about it and left the burlap on it, but it didn't suffer and still came out green. Got the idea after I made the mistake of setting my trays of wheatgrass outside to get some sun, only to have the chicks decimate them.

I put my grass clippings in the run with the birds and then I throw in some bird seed each day. The girls will work the grass clippings to find the seed and after a bit I have a nice compost mulch. Some of the Bird Seed will sprout and when the this happens the flock just gobbles it up...and they work the mulch compost even more.

They make such good, cheap labor.

I love watching them play "keep away"! Two new treats I introduced this past week are broccoli and corn-on-the-cob. I hang them just high enough to make them work for it a little. Once they figured out what they were, they went nuts for them!
