We are new to raising hens, we got four in July.

The one looks like a Barred Rock, but I am noticing a few feathers getting a shiny green color on them.

They are approx. 5-6 months old, not laying yet.

She is the only one of her breed.

Any thoughts??

Thanks!

If it is a chicken that is solid black (like a jersey giant) and it has green shine to its feathers that isn't too much to worry about as hens get these too. But if it isn't a solid black chicken and it has green shine to its feathers, chances are you've got a rooster. Pictures would definitaly help.

Oops! You must have been posting the pictures as I was typing. That looks like a hen there! It doesn't have much comb growth. If that was a rooster that comb would be a lot redder and bigger by 6 months old.

I don't see the green feathers you spoke of?

I will try to get a better pic of the feathers.

Thanks!
