Feather loss on mid back

Thank you for your comments but I honestly don't have the heart to do that. I feel really sorry for my roost that I just can't do much for him. I think I will take it to the vet cause I won't be able to clean it cause it has blood crust and I think if I take it off to clean it will hurt and bleed a lot. It's on his tail on the very back, don't know how to explain. in the puffier part of his tail
If I clean it with saline and take out any bug if he has. Do you think he will get better soon???@Wyorp Rock

Taking him to the vet would be your best option, since you are having trouble treating him. It most likely will hurt, so if you can't do it, then you will have to rely on someone like your vet to do it for you.

To me it looks like it is infected, so he needs care. I know you are trying to help him, but flushing with saline will only get you so far. You may have to debride the wound, it's hard to say, and that would involve scrubbing and making it bleed. So if you have a vet that would be great.

If he has mites, then the vet should be able to help you with those too.

Here is a link so you can search for an Avian Vet, they should be the most knowledgeable in bird health, if no one is in your area, use the vet you normally use.

New feathers coming in.

Fingers crossed.

Good luck! May have to get a chicken saddle to cover the area. Mine always seem to love the ones with new growth. It almost seems like it attracts them.

Thanks, so far so good. No further feather loss on this one and good growth continuing to develop :)

No others showing picking, so I'm hoping it was heat/stress related from the 113 degree heat and 4th of July fireworks

We're experiencing a similar thing- one of our Barred Rocks, Ruth, she's losing feathers right and left! There's a bald space on her back, and I'm a little bit alarmed. I've seen her molt
before, but this is ridiculous! Every time I pet her, feathers drop! Will she grow them back? This isn't some disorder or anything, right? I'm certain it isn't picking or pecking- she's the top hen, and I've seen her viciously peck another one of our girls when they pecked food off her back.

Hi @SuperChickRuth it sounds like Ruth is molting. If that is the case you will see pin feathers growing back in to replace them. This is something chickens do once a year.

Yes, I know they do molt, and also, in this case, the only place I see pin feathers is on her neck. There is nothing but little dots on her back where she's lost a good deal of her feathers.
I'm just wondering because it's such at a fast rate, and, like I said, I'm not seeing many pin feathers. ...But that doesn't mean they'll grow in, right?

Most likely the little dots are the feathers coming in. If you'd like to post a photo we would be happy to look at it.
