Hello all, I'm thinking I need to treat my bird for feather mites.
I have three leghorns (the worst cases) and one Dominique (no signs of feather mites).
I've laid out DE, ash and nice fluffy dirt for them, but they haven't used yet.
I was looking up Permethrin liquid and it says suitable for chickens. How do is use it? Some people put it in a spray bottle or bath? Which is better ?
Thanks!

Most use Permethrin powder and dust the chickens and everywhere in the coop. The DE is a good prevention as we use it in our coop successfully, but now that they got them, I'd go with the Permethrin.

The problem with the liquid is you're spraying your entire coop with wet stuff. In summer, it's not so bad for the chickens to get wet, but the coops we try to keep them dry.

Do you have photos of your birds?

Can you see the bugs on the birds or in the housing?

You mention Feather Mites, do you mean Depluming Mites (these mites cannot be seen, they under the feather shaft). If you are seeing Mites or Lice on the body, then using a Permethrin based poultry dust or spray will help eliminate the bugs.

With mites, you need to be sure to treat housing too.

Dusting birds is fine, but if you wish to spray, you can find premixed sprays at stores like TSC or just buy concentrate and mix according to the directions on the label.
