My18 week old Barred Rock Rooster’s feathers are looking light and spindly on the ends. These are my first ever chickens so I don’t even know if there is anything to worry about. He is acting normal, but it has been very hot, over 100, for at least two weeks straight. Is this something I should worry about?

I guess I should have said that his feathers appear to be changing as they were not that way a few weeks ago.

Do you have any other chickens? If so, do you notice her getting picked on? If she is getting picked on by one chicken, I get the bully and press on her back, it shows her who’s boss. Also, in the winter, chickens grow little feather underneath those big feathers you see on the outside, and they lose them in the summer/autumn so tha might be what’s happening. Check your yard for fuzzy feathers. Roosters also usually have a characteristic for sharp, keen feathers. Hope he’s okay!

I do have other chickens, but have never seen any of them picking in my Rooster

My husband and I both spend some time each day with our small flock of 8 and have never seen any of them picked on. Since I only have two Barred Rocks and they are both roosters, I don’t have much else to compare the look of his feathers with.
I guess I’ll just keep an close on on him and see if he starts to act sick.
