FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

Hello, this is my first hatch I'm on day 8 what should I see when I candle?

Depending on the color of the shell... the lighter the shell, the better it is to see. However, you should see a lot of veining (looks kind of like a bloodshot eye ball). There should also be a tinly little dark blob (it's a little guppy!). You might even see a heart beat, that's pretty cool! The tiny blob guppy might actually be moving around in there doing the backstroke. LOL. Be gentle & enjoy!!

It sounds like your light might not be very bright? The brighter the light, the easier it is to see. Silkie eggs are pretty light colored. Go to a dark space. If you hold the light up to the round end (air sack side), it usually gives the best view (for me anyways, I think everybody does it differently). You can even cup your fingers around the outside of the shell to block any escaping light and make it easier to see.

Some people will make a form to candle eggs with out of a cardboard box, or whatever you have, to tunnel the light to the egg and block escaping light. There is a link here on how to make a homemade egg candler: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/...-egg-candler-using-common-household-materials

Also, here are some links on pictures of candled eggs at various stages of development. It should give you an idea of what to look for.
