I'm not sure why it happens. Perhaps they push out of the shell too quickly, or maybe they had a large yolk and not enough room for it. Who knows! I did remove the other chicks in the hatcher while mine dried off, but once he was fluffy there was no picking. If you have problems you might try putting blue kote on it?
Thank you!!! I had another hatch in the middle of the night with a hernia (I guess), too!! Why does it happen? I'm confused. I had one hatch in between the two that is fine. The one that hatched in the wee hours (Rocky) looks better than the other one. She is strong, jumping over the other eggs, & chirping away. No weakness noted at all. Emma is getting stronger & she is eating chick start & continues to drink electrolytes. I think she's doing good, but I'm going to work on cleansing the area today. My main concern is that the other chicks will peck at it & make it bleed
