FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

awww i know, i felt SO bad picking and choosing who went in the bator yesterday i went and bought another one today!!! LOL!!!

I wont buy any chicks from TSC bc their Roo count is SO high its not worth it....but I *will* be in there playing with them, lolol!!!
I can tell you an easy way to sex em!! An elderly lady taught this to me and told me it was a secret and I am the only person she ever let in on it! but ive seen other people use it as well, wanna hear?

Karen has sent me paint eggs in both batches I have hatched from her and not one paint yet. I have a Dark blue,Light Blue, Buff & Lavender.
Yah, it seems to be that way. One of them was infertile, and the other looks like it made it to day 6. I candled today and found one massive blood ring! It was very disappointing. I had high hopes for that little embyo!
The colors I have left are 5 Lavender, 5 Blue/Splash, 4 Porcelain, 1 White, and 1 Buff. And 3 of my own. Still good, but no paints!
Maybe it will give me an excuse to buy from Karen again

I've been pretty lucky with trying to feather sex them at the store. I think i drive everyone there crazy, they won't let us touch them so i probably made them pick up 50 chicks for me to inspect last time before picking out 6 bantams the first time! and with the 6 silkies i got after - i sold 1, and 3/5 of the others were females.

What is with your TSC stores?! Sounds like one really needs to use a new hatchery if they're getting that high of a roo count, and the other (not touching the chicks) is crazy! Don't they realize that all the kids go into the farm stores to snuggle the chicks!? I'm sure the farm stores sell a TON just by the kids begging their parents! (I know it worked for us!). Plus, dang it... I want to "test drive" a chick before I buy it!... check out legs, bum, close look at feet & beaks, etc. Not letting you touch it... Pah! I'd probably wait until their backs are turned & do my shopping my own way. Better yet - I'd go to our local farm store instead! They've never harrassed you when buying chicks. In fact, they're practically shoving them in the kids pockets "here, tell you mommy you need some baby chickies, aren't they cute?".

Make sure not to turn them for the first 5-7 days after you set them. This gives the insides more time to get settled from their travels and helps the embryo to start growing. Once you start turning on Day 5-7 the embryo has developed all the major organs and has a better chance at surviving once the egg starts being moved.
Thanks for the info! I have definitely been doing my research the past couple weeks, um, maybe couple months!

Mine has a fence around their chicks, you can look in all you want but no touchy.... There's 2 people that work there that I talked to so much that by the end of chick days last year they'd grab the chick and hand it to me to look over... They had figured out i knew more than them and i probably wasn't going to somehow kill the chick by holding it for 30 seconds lol. The one guy also let me in the back before they even put them out- that's how i got the silkies, dug through boxes of chicks while he stood there trying to figure out what i was looking for! :D Will have to find him again...

Maybe, if none of them have pipped, maybe you can take one out quick and give it a tiny tap, hold it to your ear & listen for a chirp, maybe give it a quick candle to look for an internal pip? You're using the Mini Advance, right? I noticed they tend to hold their heat & humidity pretty well because of the dome. I know... you should wait another day...
