FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

Just placed a batch in the incubator last Sunday, 1/27. 7 Lavendar/self blue Ameraucanas and 6 French Black Copper Marans. I am so worried for them as they were shipped and went through some pretty frigid temps on their way here. Excited, though!

I got to thinking about the silkie chicks that died w/o pipping the other day- so I read some articles about it & they suggested if you're using a styrofoam bator to have one of those things that checks temp & humidity. I bought one today, & guess what? The thermometer that came with my bator is 5 degrees off! And until now I had no way to "know" my humidity- which accord to this thing was also too low. I have it corrected now, hope it's not too late for all the eggs I have in there! I use the big styrofoam bator for the eggs until lockdown, then move them to my brinsea mini advance for the last few days. Just wanted to mention this in case any of you are using a styrofoam bator & didn't know about this kind of issue...

Welcome silkiemelon! I have a question- what is a catdance silkie?
Oh no, haha, it's not a type of silkie its where I got the eggs from. Catdance silkies is just the name of it, she has a website: http://www.catdancesilkies.com/
She actually has an account here on BYC, I think its kelar. She is one of the best silkie breeders around in my opinion, and I just couldn't resist purchasing some of her eggs!

I'm very excited for the hatch! She included Paint, Blue/Splash, Lavender, Buff, Partridge, Porcelain, and White among the assorted batch she sent me :)

I'm new to all of this, but my understanding from reading up on the genetics is the hen has to be from a sex linked breed. When you use an EE Roo with the sex linked breed hen then the first generation of olive eggers will be sex linked. It sounds like second generation they will no longer be sex linked.

I guess we will see, assuming I get the incubating right.

I'm having a pretty rough night tonight and very upset. My Maran hen was pretty badly plucked by one of the Roos today. I started this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/740888/injured-hen If anyone has any advice on treating her I would really appreciate it.

Apparently I should not have been joking about claws and spurs crossed.

Theoretically my eggs will hatch on the 17th - that will be day 21.

BUT... this is my first time ever hatching eggs and I have no idea if I'll be successful or not. I have a hova-bator 1602 with automatic turner - room for 40 eggs!!!! But I'm having a little problem controlling humidity (just asked for some help/guidance on a different thread).

I bought all my eggs locally, and got a few out of my own hens (last 07 on my list):
13 purebred Ameraucanas
06 purebred French Black Copper Marans
02 Rhode Island Red x Ameraucana (roo)
12 New Hampshire x Barred Rock (roo)
02 Light/Buff Sussex cross x Delaware (roo)
05 Barred Rock x Delaware (roo)

Since this is my first time, I didn't want to spend a lot of time/money with purebred hatching eggs, so I got a whole bunch of little mutts!

Good luck and Happy Hatchings to all!!!!!
